Question re mail servers

Postby phil_uk » Jun 07 05 1:35 pm

I am new to wingate, having just moved from a competitor product.

I am using the mail server to forward mail onto an exchange server. I have everything working ok. But I am confused about the pop3 proxy server.

As I have no need to use the pop3 server (fully using smtp) i have turned it off, and I do not see any problems by doing so. Likewise I have no need for clients to connect via the pop3 proxy server, so I wish to disable it. However here is my question. I use the pop3 collection server in the mail server to collect mail from my ISP. Do I need to have the pop3 proxy server running so that the pop3 collection server uses it, and hence scans for virus. If I turn off the pop3 proxy service, does that mean the emails collected via the pop3 collection service are not virus scanned? Or do they get scanned by the SMTP server ?

Hope you can help.

Not sure I explained this simply enough. <smile>

Do I need to use and have running the pop3 proxy server in order to use the pop3 collection server to collect my email from an ISP? If it is not running, does that mean email collected from the pop3 ISP box is not virus scanned ?

Or put another way, when I use the pop3 collection server to collect email from my ISP box, which service etc etc do I need to ensure the collected email is virus checked before it is passed onto my exchange server via the SMTP server.

I think that might clarify things!!
