Re: Cannot send Emails (still)

Postby Nev » Jun 12 05 2:07 am

Hi,

It seems as though you are having some success!

Very useful would be this white paper http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=3195

Othewise, in GateKeeper > Email > Delivery, Enable delivery of mail and have you configured the host / ISP's mail server as a gateway, by the look of your log, direct delivery is in use, but this is difficult these days as mail servers almost all require a full domain name to accept mail.

So configuring and using your ISP's mail gateway is the safest bet.

As an aside, which user database are you using, Wingate or the O/s [Windows] so that users are enabled to access services other than as 'guest' shown in the logging.

Report back and someone will have this all sorted in a jiffy! :-)

Nice try, but it still doesn't work.
Under Delivery in Email, our settings are

Enable Delivery of Mail is checked.

Under Remote Delivery:
How to deliver is set to "Use gateway".
Gateway server is "mail.westnet.com.au".
Attempt immediate delivery is checked.
Use secure connection if supported by server (TLS) is checked.
Use maximum "20" threads for delivery.
Process mail every "15" seconds.

Under General mail delivery settings:
Keep copies of sent mail is not checked.
Try to deliver for "4" days or "20" tries.

Nothing is getting out. Log just fills with those "Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname" messages and all mail is put in \mail\spool\dead directory.

Grrrrr.

Ok, it is worth trying on the Wingate machine, configure the mail client to deliver to the host directly and not via the SMTP server, if not already tried, but does it succeed to deliver?

Just to validate delivery options [perhaps authentication may be required], which could be included in eMail options in GateKeeper.

Notice what is probably your NIC to the Modem:
on interface 10.1.1.5:25 error 10048

So users [10.1.1.x] deliver mail to Wingate on this interface, have you a another server on this subnet?

Do you use Active Directory?

How are users authenticated in Wingate?

Also check the network tab for adaptor usage, with the one to the Modem as external and others internal.

Might be worthwhile to post your Wingate config > Options > Advanced > Save Report.

Cannot post Emails (still)

Postby mattiske » Jun 13 05 1:53 pm

Groan. This just goes on and on.

10.1.1.5 is the IP address of the WinGate server (NT4, SP6).
We don't use Active Directory.

I tried uninstalling WinGate, reinstalling and only changing SMTP and Email options. Those error messages keep appearing and the mail is still going to the dead letter directory.

We've reinstated WinGate 3 on our primary server because it works - 6.0.4 doesn't!

The config is

Ok this will be my final response!

From the logging, it appears as though the host takes exception to the client: 'requires FQDN' so as previous try a client directly on the Wingate machine, to see if the ISP will accept mail that way.

Otherwise contact the ISP support area with the extract from the logging reporting:
Helo command rejected: need fully-qualified hostname

Check your FQDN here:

Gatekeeper --> Email --> Misc Settings --> Server Domain Name

What is placed in there?

Ok, after speaking to you on the phone I tried the connection from our mail server, this was accepted. So it looks like your ISP is being pretty strict about who they accept incoming mail from, even using a fully qualified host name(our mail server's) from my machine was denied, I had to submit it from the server itself.

You can try using your IP address but they probably block numerical domains, let us know what they say after you've spoken to them.

Server domain name is set to epsilon (the name of the WinGate server).
We are not running a domain internally.
Name resolution on our LAN is still by WINS (I know, I know ...).

Did you speak to your ISP about this?

Ok, interestingly, I was just trying to telnet to their server again, if I put in my machine at our domain, eg bosker.qbik.com it accepts the message. This is bogus because my machine doesn't have a record. So I entered matt.matt.com as my machine and it accepted that also.

Try making your mail server name epsilon.epsilon.com and see if that works.

Spoke to ISP several times and after some arguing they changed something relating to their mail server - don't know what.
As a result, our emails are now getting out. We didn't have to change a single thing with the WinGate configuration.
All very mysterious.
Thanks guys.
