Feature Request

Postby matrixthe » Jul 04 05 10:35 pm

Hi guys, I hope by the next release of Wingate there would be simpler way to manage the bandwidth of files with specific extensions like .mp3, .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .mov, etc. this would be a great help for us who manages a corporate network which can not rule out blocking these files all at once, we hope this feature can be implemented.

Thanks for the suggestion. One of our developers have said that this will be addressed in a future version.

Hi guys, any development on a new version of Wingate regarding the bandwidth management of certain files like mp3, exe, mov, qt, mpg, mpeg, etc? It would be nice if this is implemented, imagine the impact it would create, more smb and enterprises would welcome this because right now there is a serious problem with some of the files available in the internet. You can not rule out the downloading of this files because what if you are a internet cafe with a limited bandwidth are you going to restrict these files from being downloaded? No way! If you do, your potential client would get out and that would be lost revenue. So you would search for a solution that will just limit the bandwidth of the file being downloaded without eating all your available bandwidth. Another scenario would be on a hotel which offers wi-fi or lan with a limited bandwidth, you want to give it as an additional service to your guest. During tests it was fine but when you tried to implement it using "live guests" some would complain because there are times your internet is not responsive because a guest is downloading an entire OS into his laptop or a teen-age guest would be downloading lots of mp3s so what would you do? Buy wingate "6.0.5" with advanced bandwidth management, now this new version comes with policies capable of setting the download speed of specific files. Ain't that good guys? I hope this is included on the next release. Even if its done as a policy on WWW Proxy Server but works well it is the best thing that customers will recommend to other network administrators, I know I would.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. As a matter of fact this functionality has been requested a while ago and we plan to have it implemented in the next major release.
