NAT, Nup, aint happening here

Postby stu » Nov 07 03 11:00 pm

OK well Im stumped..

Ive installed trial version of Win Gate, latest version off te site 5.1

Installed it..
I already have a network.. machine I installed it on has a static ip
192.168.0.1
another machine in the lan for example is 192.168.0.15

on 192.15 Ive set the gateway etc for 192.168.0.1

but any attemps at accessing the internet etc, nothing..
in ie it sits there than comes up with cannot connect etc.

I can ping 192.168.0.1, i can telnet to services etc running on 192.168.0.1 I can do everything apart from use NAT

Ive checked that ENS is installed and is running, ive disabled the firewall.
I also had another firewall which i disabled and then unisntalled to be sure..

nothing!, the dns lookups appear in wingate, but no NAT activity is reported..

This is on Windows XP sp 1

any ideas, or anything i can send to help what might be causing this?

I checked the windows firewall was not running etc, im sure ive covered everything I can think of..

im stumped..

Stu,

What kind of connection do you have from the WG server to the Internet.

just a humble dialup :(

broadband is a myth in new zealand unless you want to pay way overcharged prices.. telco's try and claim 128k is broadband hehe.
So until they bring in decent prices stuck with good ole dialup!

anyway wingate can dial up fine.. but yeah.. other pc's with their gateway set to the wingate server dont go anywhere..

1. What is the DNS on the client set to?

2. Can you ping www.yahoo.com from a client?

Gateway and dns set to 192.168.0.1 on client machine
submask 255.255.255.0

If i type ping www.yahoo.com you can see it is getting the ip but the traffic just isnt going through...

ideas? :), if theres anything u need... ill get it!, quite keen to get this working, this is a fresh install of xp too, like 2 days old with only a couple of app's installed....

I'm at a loss as to what to check next.

Internet access is OK from the server?

No ICS running on the server?

No demonic possession evident on the server? :P

Hopefully the smart guys will have pity on us and join in with some helpful hints soon!

yeah no ics, might have to resort to that though hehe

Im on the wingate machine now happily using the internet..

and proxy mode etc works, so theres nothing stopping connections between the two machines.. just nat doesnt want to play ball..

I will try an exorcism on the wingate machine incase its been possessed hehe.

yeah hopefully someone at qbic will have an idea :)

when you ping, do you see sessions pop up in GateKeeper called NAT: ICMP xxxxx <> xxxxx?

that is most odd...

Are you sure the default gateway is pointing to WinGate as well as the DNS on your client machines? If your client sends those packets, they should show up in GateKeeper.... otherwise it would indicate that possibly the client is sending them to another gateway.

the route table looks ok, does anything show up in the firewall tab in WinGate? Maybe it is getting blocked somehow...
