WinGate 5.07 Memory Leak?

Postby SJAndrew » Nov 08 03 4:38 am

I have WinGate 5.07 on two separate machines. One machine is an AMD 450 MHz, 128 MB RAM system with Windows 20000 SP4 and 5 clients. The other is an AMD XP1700+, 384 MB RAM, Windows 2000 SP4 system with 12 clients. The latter machine runs out of memory at least daily. When I check the task manager (ctrl-alt-del), WinGate.exe is using 300+ MB of RAM!!! Only re-booting "solves" this. The much slower machine can run without a re-start for months on end. This is becoming a real frustrating problem as when Windows 2000 runs out of virtual memory, WinGate stops working, and everyone downstream loses e-mail and internet connectivity.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Are you running any plugins on these systems? If so, are they the same versions?

Are your log settings the same?

Anti-virus? Real-time scanning?

Have you deleted the history.dbf and history.cdx files.

Just some things to check and try.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your response.

Both systems run the exact same plugins (AntiVirus and GateFilter) except the one with the apparent leak has AV scanning disabled for HTTP proxy traffic.

I have deleted the history files at least twice with no effect.

The logs settings for both machines are identical.

I did see a post about M$ HotFix (patch) K8823980 causing a leak in WinXP. Incidentally, I did have this file on the leaking machine. I have uninstalled this "fix", and my current memory allocation (three hours after clean boot) is 320MB for WinGate.

The one "difference" between the two systems is that the one with the leak runs PC anywhere whereas the slow poke system with no problems doesn't.

I've run PCA on my WinGate server forever with no noticable problem.

I can think of two options to try.

1. Disable the plugins one at a time to see if that changes things.

2. Upgrade to 5.1.

Do you have any Real-time AV running on the file system the problem server?

Hope one of these helps.

Hi labull,

The only AV I'm running is the Visnetic plugin for WinGate.

It's a clean Win2000 install with only WinGate 5.07 and PCA 11 installed (client).

As far as 5.1, how is this done? Is it a free upgrade for owners of 5.07? Also, can it be installed over 5.07 (os I don't have to re-cinfigure everything)?

TIA

Steve

5.1 is the latest version. Free to registered users.

Download and install right over top of 5.0.7.

Should be no problem. (Famous last words!)
