Wingate client issues with Windows XP Service Pack 2

Postby aaron_mag » Aug 19 05 7:55 am

We've used Wingate for a long time in this office.

We just got an XP service pack 2 machine back from the computer guys (unrelated issue to Wingate). No matter how many times I reset the client it will not bring up the Wingate dial up monitor (nor surf the web). I've also restarted the computer several times.

I finally uninstalled Wingate, downloaded the most recent release, and installed that on the client. It still won't bring up the dial up monitor when we open IE.

Any troubleshooting advice besides 'reset client' restart to get this thing working again. In the Wingate Client Applet it has the Wingate Server listed. Plus all other computers in the office are browsing the internet fine.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

If the XP firewall is enabled then the client machine won't receive the GDP broadcast from the WinGate server. WinGate uses GDP to broadcast its presence to LAN clients, obviously a firewall will stop this broadcast from getting through.

You should be able to manually enter the address of the WinGate server in the WGIC applet and then connect to the server. Alternatively you could stop the XP firewall, but that depends on your companies security policies I suppose.

The XP firewall has been disabled on the machine. The WGIC applet sees the Wingate server fine. It is listed under the Wingate Servers tab of the applet.

The only problem seems to be that the little dialup monitor doesn't pop up when he opens Internet Explorer. On all the other machines if you open IE or Firefox the WG Dialup box appears for a few moments before it minimizes itself.

Are there settings in IE that I might need to reset?

Thanks for any help.

Nevermind. I fixed it.

Of all the stupid problems. The people who took the machine to work on it had unchecked the 'detect automatically' setting in IE under the options->connection tab.

It suddenly occured to me to check that, and viola, it started working. I feel like a moron.

Thanks for your help.
