Streams treatment

Postby blpot » May 14 08 4:34 pm

How can I exclude audio streams from scanning in Kaspersky plug in?
Which extension does stream files have?
Which extension does video streams have?

Does streams bear a high potential risk if excluded?

Thanks
Bernd

Reason: Streams take very long to start in Media Player and I believe its the Virus Scanning Enginge which causes delays. Takes about 3 minutes to start since traffic on internet and file downloading has begun.

Yes, that sounds like KAV causing the delay alright. KAV requires an entire file before it can scan it and pass it on the client computer. This results in the client having to wait for WinGate to download and scan the whole file before the client receives any of it.

However, you can enable drip feeding so that WinGate will start passing the first 75% of the file on to the clients as it is downloaded. The last 25% will be held back so that KAV can scan the entire file before the client receives the whole file.

This alleviates the problem on slower internet connections, and often gets rid of the problem all together on fast internet connections. On slower internet connections, you may notice a pause if playback of the stream reaches 75% before WinGate has the entire file downloaded.

To enable drip-feeding:
- Gatekeeper -> Services -> WWW Proxy Server -> Plugins
- Select "Drip feed data to client if bigger than XX kB"

It only works for streams that have a defined start and finish. Streams like radio streams that never end, or streams where the size of the file is not specified will still succumb to KAV's requirement of scanning entire files before passing them onto the client.

In these cases, as long as the streaming sites that you are adding are trustworthy, it's best to add these streaming sites to KAV's overrides to prevent KAV from scanning them in the first place.
