license count

Postby vsam » Jul 23 08 3:55 pm

I have 1 server running Wingate and 6 client PC, i have licensed wingate (and puresight filter too) 6 license pack and is registered OK
a person is also sitting on wingate server and he is using the server as a normal workstation (proxy configured as 192.168.0.1 manually in Firefox and IE)
how many PC are allowed?
Does server adds to license count?
If we add server + client, that makes 7 PC's using wingate at one time

Also in User tab, i see extra user like Administrator, Guest, are these users also counted in License count?

also when i exported my configuration file (Options,Advanced> Service information ) i find that User count 9 is mentioned there
i dont know where 9 figure came up there, i am just using 6+1 wingate setup

also i want to know, if i add 1 more PC (making 1 server + 7 client = 8) what will happen, will ALL 8 PCs stop working on wingate OR just newest user will not able to access internet

thanks

Its my understanding that the server use is not counted in the licence count if the browser and email programs are pointed to the internal IP address of 127.0.0.1 and not the server LAN card address. Make sure the 127.0.0.1 is included in the bindings.

Hi

That user count 9 just refers to how many user accounts exist in the user database. It's nothing to do with license count.

As for what gets counted in terms of concurrent (licensed) users, there are a few exceptions.

1. localhost (127.0.0.X) is not counted
2. any IP address of the WinGate machine is not counted (so if you connect out through WinGate using the LAN IP, it's free).
3. Any WRP control connection is not counted (WinGate Internet Client control connection).
4. Any GateKeeper login is not counted
5. Any DNS request is not counted.
6. DHCP is not counted.

Everything else is counted either against the client IP, or if you specify an IP address as being a multi-user IP, then every separate user showing on that IP is counted separately.

2. any IP address of the WinGate machine is not counted (so if you connect out through WinGate using the LAN IP, it's free).

could you pls explain this point :
my configuration is below:
Wingate server has 2 LAN cards
1st card = Internet ISP goes here
2nd card= IP is 192.168.0.1

6 PC clients on the LAN using
any one client configuration is as follows
automatically gets IP from wingate DHCP (let say IP 192.168.0.2 )
Gateway = 192.168.0.1 (connecting thro wingate server lan card IP)

other 5 client are also configured same way with IP 192.168.0.3/4/5/6/7 (automatically obtained from wingate DHCP), ALL Gateway is 192.168.0.1

since all 6 these clients connects thro the wingate LAN IP (192.168.0.1 as gateway), does that mean these do not count as license count?

thanks

Connections made from the WinGate computer itself do not count towards the license count. That means somebody can sit down at the WinGate computer and start browsing the Internet without using up a client license.

Only connections made from client computers (e.g. the other computers in your network, 192.168.0.2 -> 192.168.0.7) count towards to license count.

for what I know, any client connecting to the internet is counted as 1 license, save for the control channel.

anyways, wingate will inform you if you have exceeded and violated your license! wait for it... =)

When referring to "connections from the WiNGate machine", what I'm referring to is if for instance you configure your browser on the WinGate machine to connect to localhost, 127.0.0.1 or any of the IPs of that machine to connect to WinGate as a proxy.

These connections don't count towards the licence count. This is so if you are using the WinGate machine also as a workstation, it can also be protected through WinGate without consuming a license count.
