Block sites but allow others

Postby dezt » Jun 15 09 9:23 pm

The head at our school wants to ban all sites that contain games, big task but we've got to try, so we have setup a block on any website that contains the word "game " in the url. This blocks quite a lot of games websites, but it also blocks a few revision games websites as they contain the work "game" in the url. When we try to exclude certain websites from the block list we end up blocking all sites except the one we want to be accessed. We tried creating a rule which was "not met if website url = revision game website" but have realised that this blocks all website access except for the site.

Is there a way I can block the word "game" but allow access to certain websites that contain the word "game" if I specify them?

if you create another policy, which only allows access to these exception sites, that will then allow those sites where the other rule would ban them.

To whitelist in WinGate 6 like this is a little tedious, you need to add each site to it's own filter (as a single criterion) in the advanced tab.

Unless you're running PureSight for WinGate? That lets you specify lists of sites in addition to the automatic categorisation - lists which can be blocked or allowed. You can also specify partial matches on URLs.

I asked a similar question a while back, quoted here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=39402.

Importantly, for the white list to work, you need to create a separate user policy as described by ChrisH here:

Hello, I would suggest creating two separate policies for the particular group or user. One would be the "black" list, the other the "white" list. So, the black list is the one where you list sites you want to be banned using the Ban List Tab as you have done - include no Advanced items. The second policy for the user or group would have the same authentication requirements and time settings but no Ban List entries. In the Advanced section add your white list sites each with a separate filter as jasona stated. WG will logically OR the two policies. If one policy denies but the other grants rights then the right will be granted. Let us know if this helps.

Other details are discussed in the topic link above.

Cheers,
