Can't get WG working properly

Postby Kedryn » Oct 22 09 9:59 pm

Hi
I still have some problems with my wingate installation. First, the background:

LAN with about 20-30 computers that needs to access internet through NAT.
WG Server, a machine with win 2003 fully patched, Wingate server, MDaemon (for incoming mail to be filtered from viruses and spam, and redirected to an internal EXCHANGE server). 2 Nic cards, one with the lan ip, and one with 4 public IPs (WG is used to redirect some public services to the internal lan).

Now, everything works perfectly (a minor issue with gatekeeper randomly not getting some lan machine names from the DNS/DHCP, showing only the ip in the activity window, but i can live with that)
but sometimes, 1-3 times a day, all lan machines stop navigating through the transparent proxy (WWW with intercepto on 80). SMTP and POP seems to follow same fate of the www service on the WG server.
What i see from a client is that the browser show a "searching", then "contacting" , then the "transferring", but that's all. The DNS seems to get resolved, but no data comes from the remote web server. And this for all clients in the LAN.
Usually a stop-stard of the WG service is usually enough, but then i have to restart the whole machine because after few times, it not enough anymore.

What i noticed is that NAT connections from lan to internet that where working before the problem occurs, keep working. And another strange thing is that i'm using a XFIRE client on my lan computer, and even if there is no timeout set in any of the WG services, the xfire client keep connecting and disconnecting all the day. It works for few minutes, then disconnects and reconnects. I'm using same client on machines outside this network, and they work without problems.

I'm using latest WG version, but even with the one before, it was the same.

Hi,
When this problem happens, can you take a look at the task manager and check, what is wingate.exe process CPU utilization and virtual mem usage? You don't have any other firewall product installed there, do you?

Thanks,
Gene

Checked right now... virtual mem usage was moving randomly from 126,412k to 126,444k
i killed the wingate.exe and restarted it, and everything got back working again.
Now virtual mem usage is about 8,744k

It's been over two months that i reported the problem, that you told me was already known...
I'm also facing disconnect issues with some programs using ens, like putty, xfire, that keeps disconnecting after few minutes of not typing...

i'm starting to regret the day i bought wingate...
i was a fan of this software a lot of years ago, and i liked the idea of using it for the firm i'm working for now.
I bought a 50 user licence, hoping for those problems to be fixed in few weeks, but i was wrong.

I worked for a software company for 6 years, and, if bugs for the software we were selling were not fixed in DAYS, our customers would have asked for more money that those they have payed for the software.
Now my boss keeps asking why we have so many problems with internet ... what i have to say him? that we have to change software after few months we bought wingate?

Still waiting for a working version of wingate that don't disconnect chat networks after few minutes, and that don't need to be restarted 3-4 times a day...

My first post is from 22 oct 2009.. it's been 4 months, and still wingate is as buggy and unusable as before.

To keep working i had to stop wingate service and use another firewall from another vendor, that costs nearly the same as wingate, but is WAY more powerful, gives Way more statistics (i can see in real time how much band is using each user), it has deep packet inspection, and, best of all, IT WORKS like a charm....

anyone there interested in a 50 user wingate pro license? or is there any way i can get my money back?
at least, and you can be sure of that, i'll never, never, never tell someone to use wingate, ever....

Hi Marco

Sorry, this post just came to my attention. I guess it's too late to do anything about this now?

I'll have QA look at XFIRE to see if there are any obvious issues, if only for other customers.

Hi Marco,

I'm a Wingate user and I would like to test the new firewall you mentioned.
Could you tell me the name, please ?

Thanks,
Gabriel
