NAT is partially blocking P2P networks

Postby heat84 » Oct 31 09 12:33 am

The whole reason I switched from Windows ICS to WInGate was because Windows ICS was preventing WInMX from communicating properly. I also use EMule and UTorrent which would have the same problem if not for UPNP. WinMX only supports router UPNP and not Windows UPNP(apparently they're different). Now that I'm using Wingate, Emule is connecting with a Low ID which means its not communicating properly. I have the Wingate firewall disabled and no others running. The only thing left is NAT. Does Wingate support UPNP? I didn't see anywhere to configure it or enable it. But that still leaves WinMX. How do I get these programs to communicate through the NAT? My PC is connected to the server PC via a crossover cable, I should mention. Also, The server PC runs XP and my PC is running Windows 7 7600 RTM. I don't think the OS matters though as I had this problem when my PC was running XP.

Thanks

Wingate does not support UPNP. P2P programs might require special handling for they use inbound traffic for their own needs. What you can do is check the firewall tab (with firewall enabled) and note port numbers that the clients are trying to connect (they are registered as firewall hits). Then simply redirect the block of ports over to your client machine.

Pretty much so - even though Wingate NAT does support most popular protocols (like FTP, for example), P2P apps are not supported automatically. As an option you can use WGIC client installed on your P2P machine - it will request firewall holes to be opened automatically.

When I try to install WGIC, its says: A Wingate server was found running please click back to reenter installation information or click cancel to exit the wizard. So I figure the server needs to be stopped to install the client. So in stop the server and the next time I run the installer it says: A Wingate server was NOT found running please click back to reenter installation information or click cancel to exit the wizard. If I click next it finishes the installation but the Wingate client isn't started or whatever's supposed to happen after the installation is finished, doesn't. When I :try to Toggle the client, a message box appears that says: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\WGICTOGGLE.exe A referral was returned from the server.confused: Also, the incomplete installation doesn't install the Control Panel applet so when I try to access it with its Start Menu shortcut, windows asks me to browse for it.

While I was typing the above, internet access stopped on the client and I can't get it back. The network is fine. Just no internet access. I copied the previous paragraph to a text file and moved it to the server PC over the network than pasted it here. I tried restarting the server PC. Does installing the WGIC alter any network settings?

PS:E-Mail reply notification isn't working. I got the activation E-Mail with no problem so I don't think the ERN E-Mails are getting caught in a spam filter.

Ah, I thought you were running a P2P client on a separate machine - if you run it on a Wingate machine, then NAT is not involved.

I was running it on a separate machine. I didn't try installing the client until you suggested it. Besides that, hat else could be doing the blocking if the firewall is disabled ?Is the client installer incompatible with Windows 7 or something? Is that why its not working all the way?

Edit: I'm back to where I was before I tried to install the WGIC. The server and gateway are working(other then the P2P issue). Any idea why it won't install correctly? Maybe I should try installing it in safe mode or disable UAC. Is it not 64bit compatible? The installer adds items to the Start Menu and adds the Wingate applet to the control panel. It also installs the Toggle EXE. When I check the properties for the Start Menu shortcut to the applet, it has the target folder as the desktop instead of System32 or wherever control panel applets are supposed to be. The client service isn't installed or at least isn't running..

No, I take it you are trying to install WGIC on Vista machine, judging by your remark on UAC - at the moment WGIC does not install correctly on Vista, the new installer will be ready in a little while.

Windows 7 actually. Vista was released 3 years ago and you're just now getting around to making Wingate compatible with it? disabled UAC and it didn't make a difference. By a little while, do you mean a week? A month? Well, thanks for your help I guess.
