Wingate & Windows 7 (just sharing) + update new info

Postby sawi » Nov 12 09 9:15 pm

Hi, i'm trial user here.

*Using latest Wingate version 6.6.4
*also with latest Puresight 3.0

-setup windows 7 ultimate (buikd 7600 + all update from Windows Update)
-disabled UAC / windows firewall / windows defender
-install Wingate & Puresight succesfully without any problem
-running wingate, OK. But wingate will hang if try update Puresight setting

*so what i do is
-go to program files folder, into wingate folder
-right click wingate.exe (also other .exe file inside wingate folder) :- set compabilty to windows xp xp3 + run as administrator
-after doing this, everything look ok.

so actually i just want to sharing my exp installing wingate on windows 7 machine.
my question = Is't wingate & windows 7 compatible 100%, or wingate team in focus about this, or next wingate version will fix up any issue with windows 7.

Hi

We're actively developing WinGate 7 and WinGate 6.x on XP, 2k, Vista and Windows 7. My dev machine is Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

There are some issues with running on a 64bit OS, such as coping with file system and registry redirection. We have code for this in WinGate 6, as it affects things such as:

* reading the hosts and lmhosts file (since the OS redirects to Windows\SysWOW64\Drivers\etc which doesn't exist)
* some registry writing and reading, since we check OS parameters which may not be redirected.

There are also issues with running on Vista, 2k8 R2 and Windows 7, relating to process privileges, since processes no longer get a full token. This causes issues like

* WinGate engine monitor not starting on Windows 7 (since it requires elevated privileges, yet the system doesn't prompt for programs in the startup folder which require elevated privileges).

In general, things work better if UAC is turned off, but we are hesitant to recommend such a course of action.

When you update your PureSight settings, what are you trying to update? We had an issue when entering a very large number of items to the manual classification list.

Also, what issues did you see on windows 7 prior to

a) turning off UAC
b) turning off the windows firewall

I haven't found either of these necessary for WinGate engine to function.

Regards

When you update your PureSight settings, what are you trying to update?

update like
-tick/untick filtered categories

but after i set wingate.exe n other .exe file inside wingate folder compability to windows xp sp3 + run as administrator, that problem missing, wingate no more hang.
but i just random set that .exe files inside wingate folder :D

Also, what issues did you see on windows 7 prior to
a) turning off UAC
b) turning off the windows firewall

a) turning off UAC because sometimes wingate engine monitor/wingate did not running smooth. So I just, try disabled it, and it's works

b) turning off windows firewall because, before this, if setup Wingate on WinXP, wingate installer asking for turning off windows ICS/firewall (if i'm not mistake)

sorry for not give Wingate Team a complete details, or useful data for wingate team checkup & fix any bugs.
i just random try n error without any serious attention to check step by step.

Problem with Puresight

Postby sawi » Nov 17 09 6:12 pm

okay, today what i get at my windows 7 machine running wingate

1-open gatekeeper -> go to menu -> option -> plugin -> puresight -> set anything in manual classifications -> click OK
2-gatekeeper activity will not show anything (like "modify plugin") @ hang, if close and reopen gatekeeper, will appear blank windows
3-if stop wingate engine, nothing happen
3-then what i do : open task manager, kill wingate.exe

so i found what was happen, and i try doing this :
-go to program files folder -> wingate folder -> find GateKeeper.exe -> Right Click -> Properties -> Compatibilty tab
*tick box : Run this program in compatibility mode for : choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
*tick box : Run this program as an administrator
-after that start wingate engine -> open gatekeeper -> then try step 1 above -> gatekeeper will show status "Modify Plugin" -> then can save, wingate not hang.

maybe this thing happen because i turning off UAC, so everytime i run GateKeeper, windows no prompt for run Gatekeeper as administrator. So i need to set it manually like above.

after few try n error...

now i set wingate.exe / gatekeeper.exe compatibilty to Vista SP2.
wingate engine running more stable, i think it's because :
-if set compatibilty to XPSP3, wingate.exe will running under processes tree (task manager)
-if set compability to Vista SP2, wingate.exe will running as service (see at services tab in task manager)

for puregsight
-wingate will hang, if i doing any modify during any users connected to wingate (internet browsing, etc)
-so, i try terminated all connection (for me, just unplug LAN cable uplink to switch :D ) then modify puresight, save setting, success

for Windows 7 firewall/defender + UAC
-try enabled the firewall & win defender & UAC
..wingate installation success, but wingate engine monitor not starting at during startup, need to manual open
..wingate engine running, can open gatekeeper, etc but client can't access internet, if go to gatekeeper, wingate no detect any connection from client
..try disabled firewall everything working fine
