Displaying Web Addresses in History

Postby Hoof Hearted » Dec 09 09 4:31 am

I just installed Wingate on our SBS 2008 server and I dont really know what i'm doing yet. Maybe it's just me but i've been finding the documentation a bit sparse on facts.

I noticed in one of the help screens that it is possible to have web addresses displayed in the History Tab. How do I make this happen? I just see 'NAT: TCP Connection to....' type of entries.

I'm not sure I got the clients set up. I changed the client Gateway adddress to point at the Wingate Server. When I run WGIC.msi, it gives me the error 'Unable to locate a Wingate Server'. I continued the installation anyway and then configured the server in the Control Panel Applet.

I'm not sure if I should configure a proxy server in the client Internet Options. If I try and do this, the internet connection is lost altogether.

Can someone give me some pointers please?

Hi Ian,

I noticed in one of the help screens that it is possible to have web addresses displayed in the History Tab. How do I make this happen? I just see 'NAT: TCP Connection to....' type of entries.

To get the Activity and History tabs to show the website address rather than the 'NAT: TCP Connection to...', the connections must go through the WWW Proxy service. You can enable a transparent intercept on the WWW Proxy to catch port 80 traffic from NAT and redirect it to the WWW Proxy where the address can be read and displayed.

  1. GateKeeper -> Services -> WWW Proxy Server -> Sessions
  2. Enable "Intercept connections made via NAT"
  3. Add port 80 to the list of intercepted ports

I'm not sure I got the clients set up. I changed the client Gateway adddress to point at the Wingate Server. When I run WGIC.msi, it gives me the error 'Unable to locate a Wingate Server'. I continued the installation anyway and then configured the server in the Control Panel Applet.

First, note that the WGIC is optional and only recommended if you require it's functionality. Otherwise, plain NAT and proxies are the preferred connection methods.

The Windows Firewall is a major obstacle when setting up a WinGate server and is ultimately just a thorn in your side, so make sure it's either disabled, or allowing the ports that your clients need to access. The Windows Firewall is also most likely the reason why the WGIC could not find the WinGate server.

I'm not sure if I should configure a proxy server in the client Internet Options. If I try and do this, the internet connection is lost altogether.

Again, make sure the Windows Firewall is not blocking the proxy port. This will prevent clients from talking to WinGate.

One thing to note about SBS 2008 is that it is limited to one physical network adapter only. This means you will not be able to do dual NIC (internal->external) NAT with this server.

Logan: Thanks for your detailed reply. It all made sense. I uninstalled WGIC and configured a Proxy. I decided to use Port 8080. It all made sense when unblocked Port 8080 in the Server Windows Firewall.

I got a DNS problem now. I'll start a new thread for this
