Policy Question - White Listing URLs

Postby mattybrown » Dec 19 09 5:33 am

Hi

I am a complete newbie to setting up HTTP proxy servers. We're in the process of setting up WinGate WWW Proxy Server to restrict a number of our employees to being able to access a small number of websites (white list). Unfortunately, I can't get to grips with the way that the policies work.

What I want is:
- No authentication - all users have the same rights
- Users can only access specified sites, eg. google.com, microsoft.com, yahoo.co.uk, etc.

Where do I set this policy up? Can I just use the System Policy?

Whenever I change a policy, I'm unsure whether or not it has taken effect, or indeed had any effect. Results seem sporadic.

Also, I'd like to know - How long does it take for a change to a policy to take effect?

Thanks in advance,

Matty Brown

Okay, so I figured out how to use policies, thanks to another post on this forum (which, apparently I can't link to as I'm a newbie on this forum).

Policies are OR'd (that is only one policy needs to grant access for the client to get access)
Filters are OR'd (that is only one filter needs to evaluate true to grant access)
Criterions are AND'd (that is all criterions must be true in order for the Filter to evaluate true)

Now I need to white list about 100 domains. How can I do this without creating 100 filters with 100 criterion? Also, once I've done that, how do I administer a list in a treeview? Can the list be sorted? Can I import/export entries? Or is there a file I can edit directly to save me some time?

I read that WinGate v7 allows you to query tables via ODBC. That would be ideal - I could create a SQL table and administer it from our Sales Order Processing front end. Infact, I could allow the companies' managers access to it, so I don't even have to administer it myself :). But when will v7, or at least a Beta of v7 come out?
