complete newbie qusestion!

Postby speedomes » Mar 06 10 1:07 am

Hello everyone. I apologise if this sounds stupid, but I need some advice from more knowledgeable than myself.
I have a dedicated server in the UK running linux. It is hosing a number of my web sites and thats about it. I am currently living in Spain and I would like to use my server as a (VPN?) to connect to the internet and browse, download etc making it seem like my IP address is coming from the UK.
I am currently subscribed to a UK VPN company which allows me to view bbc iplayer etc but I have my own dedicated server and thought, hold on, surely I can do the same sort of thing?
Is this even possible, and if so can any wingate products help achieve this. Hope someone can help this baffled, clueless person.
All the best

HI Mike

WinGate only runs on windows, so you wouldn't be able to run it on your linux server.

Have you thought of running a proxy server on your linux machine though? Then you'd just set your browser up to proxy through that. You'd want to make sure it requires authentication so no-one else uses it.

If you need to do more than just surfing, then you could use WinGate to translate other protocols to HTTP. WinGate proxies have a way to connect out through another proxy up-stream, and can use the HTTP CONNECT method for this. This means it can be used for other protocols, such as mail. Any TCP-based protocol will work.

Another option would be if you can run a SOCKS5 server on your linux machine, and use SOCKSifying software on your client. That can then support UDP as well as TCP (therefore usable for media etc rather than just things like email and web).

Regards
