Newbie basic question

Postby ronthai » May 20 12 9:16 pm

Hi,

I went through the help files and new QBIK, but can not seem to get my basic questions answered.
My location is Thailand and are connection to the internet by cable (same as the TV gives).
This is connected to my main desktop computer.

I am going to buy a laptop which I also want to connect to the internet.
If I understand this all correctly, I need to use a standard LAN cable to connect the Desktop networkcard to the laptops networkcard, just as done with a home network. I am not sure if this is enough to just share the internet connection, since the cable "ISP" provider, just gives 1 IP, so I expect problems.

My guess is that is where WinGate then comes in.
The latest new version works on XP or not. If not where do I download the XP version?

Thank you and regards, Ron

Hi Ron

WinGate has been designed to share the Internet connection on one machine, with other machines on the LAN. Sounds like WinGate will work in this situation if you install it on the desktop with the Cable Internet connection.

When you install WinGate, simply configure a private IP address in the same range, for both the laptop and the LAN adapter on your main desktop. WinGate will check all network interfaces to determine what type of network their connected to. This allows it to see that the cable internet connection can be used for accessing the Internet. WinGate can share this Internet connection with the laptop if you configure your laptop to use WinGate.

Depending on what type of connection the laptop will make through WinGate, (NAT, proxy etc) will determine how you configure the laptop to use WinGate http://help.qbik.com/index.php?topic_id=26

WinGate 7 will work on XP.

How many network cards does your desktop have?

Just the one.
I was thinking I might need to put a second in or use a hub or router.

Hi Ron

Just the one.
I was thinking I might need to put a second in or use a hub or router.

So do you have a separate connection for your Internet cable, or does this also connect to the network card on the desktop?

If the desktop has a separate connection for the Internet cable, then there should be no reason that you cant use the network card on the desktop to connect with the laptop as I described in the first post (in a similar fashion that you described in your home setup).
Remember, that usually you will need a crossover type LAN cable when connecting two PCs together via their network cards (different to the straight through type when connecting to a hub or a switch).

Once they can reach each other via IP address, then you can configure the Laptop to use WinGate as described on the link I gave you.

If the cable modem does use the network card on the desktop, then you can put a second network card in to acommodate the connection to/from the laptop.

Hope that helps

So let's make this clear for a newbie like me.

I have now only 1 network card in the desktop.

If I put in a second and use a crossover Lan cable I will not need the hub or router.

I though that I would need to connect the cable internet to the router and from their use lan cable to go to the PC and laptop.

I have not bought anything yet, so please advice which is the best option.

Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron

I'd actually be tempted to get a wireless access point.

That will probably suit your laptop, but then also allow you to provide access to any other wifi devices (such as phones etc).

Many come with a 4 port switch built in, and they are relatively cheap nowadays.
