iPad YouTube

Postby Doog » Aug 18 12 8:21 pm

As far as I can tell I have not set up any restrictions. I cannot connect to Youtube using an iPad; however, I can coonect to Youtube using a Windows based laptop via the exact same wireless connection. The iPad can connect to the Youtube on other wireless networks and if i connect the wireless router directly to the Internet port rather than via Wingate. The error I get 'Cannot connect to Youtube'. (it also happens on other video sites but I am not sure whether these sites are merely embedding Youtube anyway)

Can someone please give me a pointer in the right direction.

Hi

How do you have your Ipad configured to use the Internet through WinGate ?. You will need to use NAT.
When using NAT (Network Address Translation) with WinGate, you need to point your IPad wireless network adapter gateway setting to the local IP address of the WinGate machine. If I understand your limited description, since WinGate and the Ipad are on the same local network (i.e. the wireless ip range), the IPad will send all traffic to WinGate (since it has been set as the Ipads gateway). WinGate will also have an Internet connection which it will use to access the Internet.

Be aware that the IPad (set to use NAT) will still require a suitable DNS service to lookup names. If there is one on the network (a DNS server) capable of resolving Internet DNS lookups, then set the Ipad to use that. Alternatively you can install the WinGate DNS Service, so WinGate can provide DNS res for clients to. In this situation the Ipad can be set to use the WinGate local IP address for both Gateway and DNS.

Thanks for you response. I will try and explain briefly the configuration.
There is a Wireless router which has an IP rage (172.31.0.x). The WAN port is connected to the same network as Wingate which is 10.x.x.x.
The iPads are configured to use Wingate as the proxy (10.0.0.2) through DHCP. Wingate is configured as the DNS server.
The Wingate server has two network cards (10.0.0.2 and 192.168.1.1) One is internal and one is external.

So, if I take the wireless router and connect the WAN port directly to the cable router (bypassing Wingate) it works. If Wingate is between the wireless router and the cable router it doesn't.

What I don't get is that a laptop connected to through the wireless (its IP address being 172.31.0.51) can use Youtube fine yet the iPad (either using the app or Safari) cannot and its IP address is 172.31.0.54. Both devices are getting the same DHCP response.

I can ping and tracert from both the laptop and the iPad to Youtube.com.

Can I bypass Wingate by putting in a specific configuration so that the iPad bypasses Wingate for a specific site?

Hi,
Thanks for the description of your setup

I take it Safari on the ipad can reach other websites through the WinGate WWW Proxy ? (Since you mention that it happens on other video sites that probably have embedded youtube videos ). It appears that this should work the way you have it set up since a proxy request to access the Youtube site should be just like any other http proxy request through WinGate.

Where are you seeing the error "Cannot connect to Youtube"?. In the ipad safari browser page? embedded youtube browser page? or are you seeing this error in WinGate activity.
You can always submit a support ticket to our support dept so we can investigate it further. We would be interested in seeing what WinGate debug logs would say about the failed you tube connection.

All of a sudden this started to work again. I am not sure why but thanks for your attention. Just so that you knwo for future reference:
Safari worked for all other web sites including Youtube.com - but it only worked for youtube on Safari if I exclude that site from Kasperski. Interestingly, the only change (that I know about) is that Kasperski has been updated. The server, router and iPad have had no changes.
Strange but solved now.
