Wingate Installation Win XP Blue Screen

Postby Joules » Jan 18 06 10:50 pm

Hello!

Can someone help me.

We have Wingate + Wingate VPN here, and I have connected a remote machine using Wingate VPN to the server in the office (the VPN we have does not appear to be stand alone).

I want to do the same with a second remote machine (running Win XP Pro - very new machine so probably SP2), however I install Wingate and when the computer restarts I get a blue screen of death.

On the blue screen there is a load of the usual coding etc quoted, together with a mention of the qbikhkxp.sys file.

The blue screen appears when trying to go into safe mode or any other start-up option except for 'Load last known good configeration'. Clearly when I select this the machine boots into window ok but since it was wingate that is causing the problem, the last know good configeration option disables it.

Only solution so far is to uninstall Wingate, which isn't particulalry helpful.

Any ideas!

Oh, and just for background, I had to go into regedit to stop the firewall/internet sharing error message coming up when trying to install wingate (as detailed in the knowledgebase).

Sorry for the long post, all help much appreciated

Which version of Wingate did you install?

We have a licence for v5, but I tried installing a trial of v6 as well and I had the same problem.

Did you try installing the latest version from the Web site (6.1.1)?

Just checked and it was 6.0.3. When I get the chance I will try the newest version.

I would prefer not to have to upgrade so it would be good to find a solution for v5 if possible.

Also, we have got our licenced version of v5 already installed on a different computer with the same version of win xp pro, and it works fine.

The two computers are two different models, the newer one being a Dell Optiplex GX620.

Unfortunately, running v5 might be difficult with XP SP2 - due to the additional security features added in SP2. v6.1 has multiple fixes that deal with this elevated security level.

When running with the older versions DEP could be an issue. If the Dell system supports it (Might do, I haven't checked) you could get around it by disabling DEP.

However, as Genie suggested, upgrading to the latest is always the best option.
