visit a site that dont exists coz wingate srv cpu 100% usage

Postby pgeric » Feb 16 06 12:04 am

hi all. this my first time, I say hi to all. : )

let's back to my question. I have configured wingate server on my old machine. it's running as windows nt 4.0 with sp4 installed.
while at first seem everything well, I have typed in a wrong or non-existing web address on my client computer, let's say www.hksurf.com. then, the wingate server will coz 100% cpu usage due to internal gateway ip address try to resolve it. but it never seem resovled. I have looked in the activity tab of the gatekeeper to obtain this information.

my question is , while the correct web addresses were typed in, everything works fine.

any one have ideas of this. thanks you.

hi all, normally, the simple web query should only take the cpu usage about 10 - 15, I dont know why it would take 100% usage.

thank for help : )

Hi Eric,

You caught us outside of daylight hours; sorry for the slow responses then. What did you configure in the end to resolve this? It sounds like a DNS related setup issue, but would be good if other users could benefit from your fix as well.

hi, Pascal, that's ok : )

Q) the problem that I encountered is when I have visited a non-existed web sites from client. the server try to resolve the address and here after, the cpu usage get 100%.

A). sorry for the first time : (, because I have configured too many items, so I'am not sure how this could fixed. It seems to be reconfigured the all adapters correctly to internal and external network.

and if I remember that, I post the fix again.

hi,
over few days inspect, I have been confirmed that full cpu usage was due to dhcp service enabled. After turn it off, it works fine. : )

Awesome, thank you. At the time - had you configured DHCP at all? (Sounds like a machine was repeatedly asking for a lease or something like that)

hi, that's right and sounds interesting. the dhcp service I never configured before and let it settings as installation default. as it enabled, the dns resolver repeatly query to obtains the ip address of the web site on the private gateway ip address of the wingate server. after turns the service down, everything works fine. : ) ... I think I could not be sure which part(s) raises this. : )

Well, that's strange. Normally it is not necessary to configure the DHCP service at all - WinGate, by default, should work out of the box without any configuration. (DHCP to clients on an internal adapter, NAT through with intercepts for most known protocols).

Would you mind emailing me the result of an "ipconfig /ALL" from the command line, please? It will definately help improve setup / basic installation tasks if we can nail down exactly what caused this so it doesn't catch anybody else in future releases.
