Having A Hard Time Understanding WinGate & VPN's

Postby gory » Mar 19 06 6:41 pm

Help - could someone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to establish a VPN for our office. I know that the VPN connection is working "in-house", as I can connect to the VPN server from another computer on the network. I've tried downloading, installing, and running the WinGate VPN, but have not had any luck - perhaps because I'm running an older version of WinGate (5.2.2). The remote clients are using the VPN client that comes with XP - should I not be able to create a TCP mapping for port 1723, and redirect to the VPN server? I read somewhere that it also uses port 47, so just in case, I have also created a TCP mapping for port 47.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Wingate VPN uses proprietary protocol, which does not require ports 1723 and separate protocol to be handled - all you need is to open a hole in your router for TCP _and_ UDP traffic through port 809. Now, newer version of Wingate VPN would not work with 5.2.2 so you have to update your server.

OK - so rather than upgrading my WinGate & purchasing the VPN option, could I not simply open up the required ports for the MS VPN client?

Oh, my apologies - I though you were talking about Wingate VPN. Now, for Microsoft VPN - I would recommend updating to the latest version - it has automatic support for it.
