User database in NT 4 domain from Windows 2000 Server

Postby munrobasher » Apr 26 06 2:43 am

We're still on an NT 4 domain. WinGate is installed on a Windows 2000 server in this domain although the server isn't a domain controller (PDC or BDC).

When I try and switch to using the domain user database, it imports the server's (VSERVER01) local list of users and I can't find anyway to import the domain user list.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Rob.

Guessing it has to be a BDC on an NT 4 server

I've built an NT 4 server as a BDC instead of the Windows 2000 server and installed WinGate on there. The user database is now populated from the domain database as expected. That also allowed me to turn on NTLM authentication against the WWW proxy and now I'm magically seeing user names authenticated correctly.

So I'm assuming from this that if you are using an NT 4 domain architechure that WinGate has to be installed on a PDC or BDC NT 4 server and that you cannot use a Windows 2000 Server - as this cannot be a domain controller.

Unless there is someway to get an non-Domain controller to read the user database from a domain controller?

Regards, Rob.

Hi Rob

This should have worked, and normally only requires entering the machine NetBIOS name of the NT Domain controller into the remote domain configuration setting.

It does require that the WinGate service (in service control) is set to log in as a domain administrator, rather than localsystem (which is the default).
