WinGate and LOCAL WEBSERVER

Postby sannaide_wingate » Jul 20 15 1:14 am

Hi there,

I installed WinGate and removed all default bindings.

I installed Apache WebServer and it listens on port 80.

I wanted to access my local webserver from my lg f70 D315, and i used "tethering" so i got my windows 7 to "create" another LAN connection, after connecting smartphone to USB.

Ok, I'm not a networking expert I only got some basic knowledge but...I understand what a "proxy" is...I hope...

The LAN NETWORK is (looking at "ipconfig") is showing me SMARTPHONE (LAN) IP (192.168.50.100), GATEWAY (BUT NO LUCK ACCESSING INTERNET, I KNOW WHY...I THINK I HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR INTERNET TETHERING WELL THIS IS ANOTHER TOPIC...)

Here is the strange thing: Apache is listening to 192.168.50.100:80. Ok. No way to access http://192.168.50.100 from that evil smartphone. Yes, everyone can connect to Apache in httpd.conf, in fact later i will explain...try to exaplain...

So, I used WinGate.

Ok, so, I configured WinGate to listen ONLY to 192.168.50.100, choosing the right "interface", something like this...the brand new one, after windows 7 detected tethering. (192.168.50.100).

But...this is not possible...how can WinGate listen to that IP same port if is still used by Apache? Voilà! I got the webserver's start page (http://192.168.50.100) from lg f70 (chrome) (yes...is a good smartphone, not evil, just joking!) .

Thanks really a lot for explaining!

Regards,

Davide

Hi

What is the usage in WinGate for that adapter? If external, then Wingate would have firewalled it, so blocked connections on port 80 incoming on that interface.

By creating a proxy on port 80 on that interface, WinGate would have opened a hole in the firewall (In Extended Networking), which let the connection in for Apache.

Instead of using a service for this, you can just open the hole in the firewall directly (port security tab in Extended Networking).

hi!
ok, i run wingate on my laptop, i don't know internal or external...
firewalled...mh...i see "reject requests" on www server only listening adapter on same apache server address listening that adapter.
ok, i will look at extended networking...maybe a service is not needed to access apache from my smartphone. did i understand well?
i will try
reading again your answer, i think i understood better, ok, if firewalled sure i can't access apache from my smartphone.
finally, i keep not understanding how is it possible to have www proxy service running on same address and port of apache running same machine...

thanks for explaining,

ok, things are going better
i understood i just have to start wingate to access local apache from my smartphone, with virtual host added and in httpd.conf Listen 80, without ip
but, how is proxying possible WITHOUT any services listening?
sorry for my ignorance...i just have developing skills and only a little networking...

Hi

it's because WinGate is also a firewall. So it can be blocking access to other services on that computer.

Hi,

I found "Extended Networking" and found firewalling options...a lot of things now clear...as you said me a few posts ago, thanks.

Ok, i could mark this solved but...I do not want to ask useless questions, simply I really do not understand if, i ABSOLUTELY REMOVE any WWW BINDING ANY ADAPTER and I start WinGate, it's proxying...without settings?!? and all adapters removed?!? I looked at Window's adapter's configurations dialogs (IPV4, IPV6 and so on) and yes, one of the services bound to that adapter is wingate. This is OK. I will take a look at netstat -a and see what's happening! If i find someone listening to some address in some port like 80, it could be wingate. Impossible thing, if Apache is "Listen 80", i think...'cause wingate should not start, or at least WWW SERVER but...maybe i have to sit down and study this software...

Thanks again,

Davide
