How to setup Reverse proxy for HTTPS

Postby Grant » Oct 06 18 12:38 am

I have just installed the trial of WinGate in order to evaluate it.
One of the features I need to have working is the the ability to reverse proxy HTTPS sites.
I have managed to get the reverse proxy working for HTTP, but I cannot get it working for HTTPS.

Can anyone point me to a guide that could assist, or provide me with some insight on what be causing the problem.

When I try and connect to the https site, I see a connection in the activity window in WIngate, but the url is coming through as http without the rest of the URL, and from time to time it shows a http:1.1 Malformed message.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

for reverse proxying https, you need to do the following.

1. Set up a binding policy in the WWW proxy to listen on the https port you wish to use (usually 443). This must be configured to use a certificate, and the web browsers accessing the site need to trust the cert, or they will put up a wall of warnings and possibly prevent access to the site. You may need to import a CA-generated certificate into WinGate for this.

2. In the web server tab of the WWW proxy, when you create a site for reverse proxy, in the hosts tab, check the request is SSL option. This will then match that host header for https requests. This feature is so you can have http and https versions of the same hostname/site treated independently by the proxy.

3. We recommend using web access control rules to only allow access to the sites you're reverse proxy for, to prevent people using the reverse proxy as an open forward proxy to go elsewhere on the Internet.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have managed to get the reverse proxy working. I missed the adding of the certificate to the Binding.

Thanks again.
Regards.
