benefit to using wingate internet client?

Postby deftech » Nov 29 06 9:49 am

Please indulge my laziness oh knowledgable wingate users, and enlighten me on why someone should or shouldn't use the wingate internet client? I have not used it and am wondering if I can add ease to my life by using it.

Thanks and happy holidays.

In short, you have better control over what to allow and what to not allow in terms of network connectivity from the client.

The WGIC is an optional install and creates a new connection method to the internet; it can also do the authentication. It is a Layered Service Provider and basically captures WinSock calls from applications that need to use the network.

The WGIC can be setup to control whether Applications on the Client computers are allowed to start, or allowed to access the network. It can also control whether the applications needs to act like a server (serve requests to connections originating from the internet), a client, or to bypass the WGIC to allow another connection method like NAT.

When there is more than one WinGate installation on the Local Network or setup in the WGIC, the WGIC will prompt the user to change WinGate servers in the event of one going offline.

It can also be used by a remote computer that would like to send all its web traffic through a remote server; for example a person connected into work via a VPN.

And finally, it can be controlled by policies, times, and centrally managed from the Winsock Redirector Service in WinGate with the correct license type; i.e. Enterprise license which is also the Trial License.

The requirements to use the WGIC are:
A Windows based computer.
DNS Connectivity via the LAN Clients Network card settings.
For the WGIC to automatically detect the WinGate server, the GDP Service must be started in WinGate. If the LAN Clients have a firewall they will need to open up UDP 368 to receive the GDP broadcasts.

Extra Information:
Works well on a Terminal Server.
Can be distributed via an AD Group Policy.
Provides similar connectivity to NAT.
The WGIC can be installed from the main WinGate Installer or it can be found in the Clients directory in the WinGate root.
