Wingate user sessions don't time out

Postby Clemens » Dec 03 06 8:45 am

Hi,

I'm having a problem with Wingate version 6.1.4 b1099 running on Win2k that's quite annoying:
From time to time it happens that only WWW server sessions don't time out.
This means that gatekeeper shows sessions from users/machines not active on the network.
Hence this not physically active machines/users consume a license which can only be reclaimed by restarting the Wingate engine.
Terminating the session in Gatekeeper doesn't work; the line says "Terminate session [number] on [IP]", but neither does the session disappear nor is the license returned.

I plan to upgrade to 6.2.0 this weekend, where the sessions will be cleared anyway, but if it's a yet undiscovered bug in Wingate, this might happen in the next release also.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,
Clemens

I'd suggest upgrading to v 6.2 - it has numerous bugs fixed and it would be easier for us to identify the bug.

Hi genie,

Upgraded this weekend, so far no sessions were kept - but I have to admit, I'm not sure when they started to hang normally.

I'll have a sharp eye on it and will let you know.

Thanks,
Clemens

Hi again,

upgrading to 6.2 didn't help; sessions are hanging again.

But I guess I have at least a hint: it might be related to a lost connection, either with a client device or if the line to my ISP is dropped (my ISP disconnects dial up connections every 8 hours).

Only one client experienced this problem - it a WLAN client. So it's likely that connections to the server are lost due to insufficient coverage.

I also had a mail client running on the Wingate machine, using the POP proxy, and this session also hang. Since I don't think that local sessions can be lost due to a lack of connectivity, all I can imagine is a a dropped line to my ISP.

The interesting fact is that the clients can reuse their hung sessions, so they don't open up new ones.
While this is no problem when users are reconnecting from the same device it becomes one when they want to use another device - I run out
of licenses.

I have just enabled the session creation/session termination and debug logging for the WWW service, I hope this is more helpful than my assumption on lost connections.

Considering this setup is only for a 3 person household it might not be reasonable to get a 6 CCU license, but I guess to circumvent the out-of-licenses issue it might be the fastest (and maybe easiest and/or only) way.

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Clemens
