Router

Postby DaveC » Dec 16 03 3:29 am

Hi All
Only new to Wingate and setups. Ive just installed a broadband router onto a network whcih was using Wingate on a server with ISDN dialup. Initially i was trying to bypass Wingate by setting each pc to gateway directly through the router, but problems started. My router became overwhelmed with requests (don't know where from, just flicking port activity lights) which caused it to shut down. When i got it going again, my broadband connection would work for about 2 mins and then shut down. Would i be better uninstalling Wingate completely (if thats where the problems are arising) or using Wingate to allow broadband access via a router? If the latter could you advise me of the setup procedures?

Thanks in advance

hi!

what router are you using? same happened to me with a 827 series cisco router for dsl connection. Anyway if you wan´t to try something, set as default workstation for the router the computer with the wingate sofware, so the router acts as a regular modem, and use wingate´s routing cappabilities. For me works fine.

bye!

I would also check for viruses on your network.

if you are getting that much activity when there is nothing much supposed to be happening, you may have a machine with MSBlaster or similar on it, which could be bringing down your broadband router.

Thanks for the replies. have since found out more info... the wingate vers. is v2 so it does not have routing capabilites, so im told. each pc DNS lookup is both set for the server hosting wingate and the router. I rekon maybe everything is then reflected onto the router, bombarding it with requests??? Obviously its not configured correctly as why would you have DNS requests for both server and router when 1 can do the job? Can i upgrade this version to a higher v with routing caps? would the upgrade require a full installation or a simple patch add on?

Thanks again

the upgrade from verison 2.x is a new set of installs, but it should migrate most if not all of your settings.

You even get a rebate on your 2.x key.
