DNS issues

Postby farees » Dec 18 03 6:49 am

Hello,

I am installing wingate 5.2 on a windows 2003 server using active directory. The domain controller is a different windows 2000 machine running DNS. The wingate is a bridge using IPSKY2e satellite through GT&T and the local network.

Problem 1 - when synchronizing to import users, it only brings in the local user group, not from the active directory.

Problem 2 - the server can access the internet properly, but the clients can't resolve DNS. I am using both the windows 2000 DNS (reqd for Active Directory) and the DNS in Wingate. All machines point to the wingate for DNS resolution and when they access the internet it shows the connection and it shows it not resolving and trying other combinations and finally trying to resolve with the local domain. I have disabled DHCP in Windows and manually tried configuring clients but only with the same results. Note that I can ping and manually address my clients browsers to get to the internet.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi

Firstly I would recommend taking a look at the our knowledge base articles on WinGate configurations in the Active Directory.

http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase

Here you will find that your client machines should have their DNS settings pointing to the AD DNS server so that Active Directory can function properly.

On the AD DNS server the "forward lookup zone" setting in the DNS server(that the server uses to resolve Internet requests) must be pointed at the Internal IP of the WinGate machine. WinGate will then handle all of the Internet requests and let the AD DNS server handle all the Active Directory requests.

The knowledge base articles will help you with the config you will need.
