Wingate Firewall Problem !

Postby etimag » Dec 19 03 3:58 am

Hi,

Here is my problem,

My Adsl connection is 512 via speedtouch 330 direct connection usb. Wingate can see the internet ip and firewall works fine also I can see log online what is happenning at the firewall screen.

But I purchased zoom x4 modem for better speed and protection. I connect it via 2nd nic. So my network ip like 10.x.x.x and adsl ip 192.x.x.x. Everthing works fine but on the extended network I cannot see the internet ip I can only see the 2nd nic private ip. Also on the firewall screen there are no more logs kept.

When I connect through speedtouch, shield up web page says I have a procted PC. But with zoom x4 I have 2 ports open and rest is closed. Can anyone explain me why is like this ? Which one is safer ?

Hi

I take from your description that the ZOOmx4 has its own NAT, (Network Address Translation), which is why the Network card on the WinGate Server that it is attached to has an Private internal IP as it considers itself part of the Zoom4's IP address range. The external IP of this Modem/router will not show up in WinGate.

Does the Zoomx4 router have its own firewall?
As the other Internet connection (USB) external IP should be protected by WinGate's firewall. Since the external IP of the Zoom X4 is looked after by the router itself you will have to read the documentation of the router to find out what sort of security it provides.

Thanks for your reply. They called their firewall dynamic napt and they also mention that this not very safe for small business users. Do you think when wingate controls the zoomx4 internel ip is safe enough. Maybe zoom filters all the attacks so wingate firewall does not show anything.
One more think as I said with shield up web site check my machine and find all the ports closed. Even if I install norton personal firewall same thing I think shiled up can only trace x4 external ip not internal ip !
