Combine bandwidth?

Postby Ekkas » Jan 18 04 5:30 am

I'm planning to get a 512k sattelite connection but with a 50/1 contention rate. So sometimes the connection will be 'hogged' and slowish...
Can Wingate enable me to 'add' some bandwith with an ISDN (dial-up) in the temporary cases where one (permanent) connection isn't sufficient?

Hope you understand what I mean.
Thanks in advance.

I know what you mean, but unfortunately i don't think WinGate is currently able to offer you this ability. You can have multiple different connections, but as i think what you would be after sounds like having 2 internet connections up at the same time, this would cause some probs. For a start this would mean having 2 default gateways in your route table(assuming that each is connected via a different ISP), which Windows doesn't like so much, which of course would have a knock on effect to WinGate.

We have started work on a bandwidth control, however this is more directed towards limitiing the available bandwidth and controlling who has access to greater amounts of it, rather than combining multiple connections together to increase bandwidth.

I hope this helps,

Regards

Neil, suppose you have a similar need. That is, to have 2 internet connections at the same time, but with the same ISP. That is, you wouldn't require 2 default gateways. Is this possible?
I currently have a DSL connection at 256K. For location limitations, the ISP can't double the bandwidth to 512K, but I can purchase a 2nd DSL at 256K. Would this work with Wingate 5.2.2 ?
Otherwise I suppose I could setup a 2nd Wingate PC with the 2nd connection and divide the users in groups.

No Dan, I still have a single PC with Wingate. But a couple of months ago the ISP came out with an offer nationwide to double everyone's bandwidth for free, and in our case, we have about 1.5 times the previous bandwidth, which has been very acceptable so far.

Thank you.

Hi

Multiple default routes causes headaches for routers... it basically creates a cross-roads, and the router needs to know which path to take.

Unless some more information can be provided to the router to enable it to make a decision, then it may make a different decision each time, or always pick the same path... either of these scenarios is not useful since the first would break TCP connections, and the second would not aggregate any bandwidth for you since it would only use one connection (this is what normally happens).

We are working on a solution to this problem, but it is still about 6 months off realistically.... we hope to get it into WinGate 7.0

Hello Jarana,
Well really good for you that ur ISP increased ur Bandwidth without any increase in fee,....hope I was there where u are. Well here in Russia .its 64Kbps ADSL with 60$per month ..unlimited usage.....but an another isp recently started with 40$ per month 64Kbps ADSL....I planned to get two of those from that new ISP and route heavy d-load traffic like Kazaa (using Socks proxy) thru one and normal web surfing thru the second....Well since I am a med student and virtually a newbie in netwotking I got a second server, installed WG in it and plugged it to the same Switch of my LAN...since I did not still get the new ADSL connections I used dialup in the second server (the first server using the old ADSL) and made a new socks proxy with port 1081 in it and at the clients computers using Kazaa I made its (Kazaa's) connection settings pointed to the second server ip and port 1081....and the normal web browsers to point to the first server ip.....as far as I can know it worked ok as in the download passed thru the second server and the web browsing thru the first. I just tried this setting once and will have to do it again to see if it really works out
....................Me just aint know anything ins netwotking...but still playing thru...We just want a 24hrs d-load and a normal websurfing...hope I will triumph in this endavour

with respect
Dan
