Wingate and Active Directory

Postby robin.lan » Jan 19 04 5:22 pm

As 'freshman' to the forum, sorry for if my questions was mentioned some where before, though I checked already.

We are trying to install Wingate to work with Active Directory (AD) user database.

Question:
1. If Wingate will get the password of AD account as Wingate password?

2. If the answer of above is 'yes'. When user change their password on AD, will the Wingate password changed?

3. We are planning to use Wingate e-mail as well. If there is any quicker way to setup e-mail using any default setting? We got 2000 students account to be setup.

Regards,

Robin

Yes WinGate does work with AD. Either with them running on the same machine, or communicating across the network. Setup of WinGate of course depends on the scenario. However, re your passwords question. WinGate never actually knows the NT password, we just act as a link between whatever the client app is and the NT auth-ing mechanism.

We've done quite a bit of work on this recently, and have had test situations running with over 10,000 AD users interacting with WinGate, all with Email on the WinGate machine. If you use WinGate for mail, their is an option to create a WinGate Email address for every NT user that we know about.

Thank you, Neil, for the advice.

After some experiment been done, here are some conclusion as followings

1. Running Wingate (WG) on a none Active Directory (AD) server. WG E-mail will not change (synchronize) as AD password been changed. Either set 'User Authentication' to 'Windows NT/2000/XP Pro Accounts' or 'Either WG or Windows accounts' within 'User Dabase Option'

2. Running WG on AD server. WG e-mail will synchronize with AD user password. ONLY if the 'User Authentication' set to 'Windows NT/2000/XP Pro Accounts' within 'User Dabase Option'.

I am using WG 5.2.2 and my server is Win2K server.

If you can confirm my found?

Robin
