Vista Ultimate Media Center Guide Download problem

Postby batwater » Mar 26 07 3:42 pm

I am running Vista Ultimate Media Center Edition. I am unable to download the guide. The error code generated by MCE is 13 which indicates a communication error. When I bypass my internal Wingate server/network and go directly through my hardware firewall the download works correctly.

Per the history log MCE makes an SSL connection to a Microsoft server at the following URL

ssl://data.tvdownload.microsoft.com:443

it also issues a command GET:resources\WPAD.PAC
There is also a DNS lookup for WPAD.PAC

I'm thinking that this GET command should be flowing through the SSL connection but becasue it doesn't get established it fails and shows up as a separate entry.

Wingate security is default, I am running the most recent version

I have tried the following:

1) added port 443 to port security on the Extended Network Driver
2) I tried adding the URL to the whitelist on PurSite

Help Please!!!

Thanks

that request for WPAD.pac is for a proxy auto-detect file that is used by browsers to automatically configure themselves to use a proxy server.

If that's failing, there are a couple of reasons. Did you modify the WPAD.pac file from the WinGate\Resources directory? Usually this is created by WinGate.

Other option may simply be to disable "automatic proxy detection" in your internet browser, and manually configure it to use WinGate.

Adrien, the I/O to the Microsoft Guide server(s) is generated/controlled by Microsoft's Media Center Edition software, the IE browser is not involved. I will try turing off proxy detection when I get home this evening just to validate.

the WPAD.pac may be a false lead, it just happened to show up in the log. I did not modify WPAD.pac on the Wingate server (Server 2003) my other 5 computers going through Wingate do not have a problem with proxy detection nor does Vista when using IE. As an additional data point, I have 2 different installs of Vista, 1 Premium, 1 Ultimate running; both fail when I try to do either a manual update or when the system tries to do its daily channel guide update through the MCE software engine.

Specific information on the error being generated from this site...
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/articles/526231.aspx

"Media Center guide download uses SSL and the HTTPS protocol. This protocol requires the ability to access the internet on port 443. In addition, the guide download communicates in some instances via the standard HTTP port - 80. You may need to configure your firewall to allow internet communication on ports 80 and 443 if you have them locked down otherwise. "

Perhaps this will help.

Note again, that if I hook the Vista machine directly up to my Linksys hardware firewall the guide update process works as expected.

** Additional Info found on internet **

EPG http request through and the https request on port 443. However, the server (Microsoft) is answering on another port (varies) which is blocked by the firewall.

Thanks

I found the problem, PureSite was working, Doh! Content guide for DirecTV had, well, naughty content words for all of those pay per view adult channels and skinemax, uh Cinemax. Added microsoft.com to the whitelist and all is well.
