i am trying to setup a vpn from one remote office to another but i keep getting the error message connection refused by host. I have 2 adsl routers standard mentor ones what do i need to do i cant seem to find step by step instructions anywhere. do i need 2 network cards in my machine??
please help

What is the exact error message you are getting?
Just as something quick to check...
The user login credentials that are used in the VPN config file, (the file exported from the host and imported to the joining machine) need to be of a valid user in the user database that the Host WinGate VPN uses.

the exact error message is "Connection refused by remote host" when i set up the host i then exported the file and imported it into my other site
is there a special client version of the software as i have installed the downloaded version on both machines??

No, but connection refused by remote host indicates that the remote host is not accepting connections. This might simply be because of an intermediary firewall, or because the appropriate pinholes haven't been opened in your ADSL router.
So, check that you have opened pinholes on the hosting one for port 809 TCP.

You'll need to check the router documentation for that. It depends on the make / model, etc. The one I have at home uses an HTTP connection, which gives you a series of pages to configure it on.

i can get into the router i have a virtual server tab that has public port private port, port type and host ip address
would this be what i need to configure??

further to my last email i have added port 809 to the router and have been to
www.grc.com and used shieldsup to probe my connection and i says that port 809 is open but i still cannot connect to the remote site
any ideas

Can you open a telnet connection to port 809 ? (From a remote machine). Simply run
"telnet ipaddress 809" from the command prompt. (Where ipaddress is it's external ip) If you get a connection, that's all fine. If NOT - something is not right. Double check that the VPN Server is listening by running netstat -an on the server. Make sure that there is a TCP socket listening on port 809.
Then, your VPN is still configured on port 809,correct ? (Otherwise, replace all instances of 809 with the port number it is configured with)

hello again
ok the Vpn that i have here as now established a connection to the remote host but when i click on the remote computer i get an error message "EWSPDC is not accessible" "The Remote Procedure Call Failed"
any ideas

That sounds like a permissions / related networking issue. First thing to check is what rights you have as the user you are logging into that machine with. Secondly, make sure that the tunnel is setup correctly. (Can you ping the internal IP addresses of any machines on the remote network ?)
If not, you might need to open the same port but for UDP. (For the tunneled traffic)

what i have now done is put VPN server Site 1 on 1 machine and the client on site 2 on 1 machine i can get vpn to connect but when i try and browse i get a windows logon screen which i then type the username and password that you use to get onto the windows machine on site1 the server but i keep getting the error message //red is not accessible (red being the name of the server pc) you may not have permission to logon to this machine i have tried changing the subnets server machine is 10.0.0.11 and subnet 255.255.255.0 and the client machine is 192.168.0.10 and subnet 255.255.0.0 but still no joy any ideas??

what i have now tested is the MTU?? i can ping the server machine 10.0.0.11 ok i get TTL=128 but when i try and ping 10.0.0.11 -l 1422 i get request timed out..
any ideas

That is an MTU problem. If you search the VPN forum, you'll find a link to a MTU setting application (I think it's called DrMTU) You need to adjust the MTU for the appropriate adapter to a lower value (1350 is the most popular for users experiencing the same problem)
