smtp problem

Hi - i am having problems with OE and sending email on the wingate VPN server. It works occasionally - but most often gives a timeout error. Other non wingate machines on the network can send OK. As a VPN server there are no settings for pop3 or smtp.
Any suggestions?

problem sorted - mtu problem on vpn server.
The vpn was working fine with respect to clients accessing server. I reduced the MTU to 1300 on the server and email works fine.
