VPN Monitor does not open

Postby EricB » Aug 24 04 10:40 am

Hi,

The VPN Monitor loads into the systray, but when I try to open it, as soon as I type password and click OK, it disappears. Everything was working fine for a month before this problem started.

Also, I don't know when this 2nd problem started, but when the VPN service starts or is running, no one can access the server. I cannot ping the server either, however all computers can go on internet. When I first logged onto server, it wanted me to upgrade to VPN 2.0. Perhaps this changed firewall settings. I can't look at the settings due to the first problem listed above.

Thanks, Eric

Did you run an upgrade recently ? It sounds as if you have and unfortunately, you seem to be suffering from two of the more common problems with it.

First, the inability to log into the local network is caused by incorrect adapter useage. WinGate (And WinGate VPN) deems an adapter that has a default gateway to be an external (public) adapter.

Your second problem is the disappearing GateKeeper. We are trying very hard to reproduce this one - so perhaps you can help me out a bit here. Check in your installation folder (Normally C:\Program Files\WinGate)

There should be a sub-folder called "DLL Cache". If that folder exists, there will be a .dll file (Or perhaps 2) in there. If that is the case, can you zip those DLLs and email them directly to me, please ? My email address is listed in my profile (pascalv at qbik dot com)

If that folder does not exist things are going to get a little bit tricker. Can you then search for any / all instances of the following DLL files:

69cc632d-fefe-4803-b4ee-6b2c1f97c2af.dll
d468f96e-bc1d-4939-8892-5374e127b603.dll

Please make a note of where they are found and then zip and send each file to me as well, telling me where the files came from. If you could do that, I would be very very appreciative, as we've been unable to reproduce this and I believe it to be a DLL versioning issue.

To fix it, you should copy the DLLs from "C:\Program Files\Qbik Licensing" to the "DLL Cache" folder. This process should happen automatically, but in some cases (Working out which, which I can probably do with your help in this case) it does not happen and causes the problems you've seen.

Hi Pascal,

I did as you asked and found the two dll files. They are zipped will be sent to you when I return to my office in a few hours. I found them in the "c:\Program Files\Qbik Licensing" folder.

In your reply above you state that Wingate VPN views adapters with a default gateway as public adapters. I'm not clear on how to correct this. Would you mind providing a detailed solution? I can tell you this firm uses static IPs with a default gateway assigned. Can I make the correction in Wingate VPN?

Thanks, EricB

Hi EricB,

Thanks for the DLL files - that's appreciated. So there is no "DLL Cache" Folder ? Hmmm. Is there anything different about the installation directory ? (Different path, rights / etc.)

To correct the adapter useage is fairly easy. Open GateKeeper (Which you will be able to do once you have the DLL Cache folder created and copied). Then, switch to the "Network" pane. At the bottom, you will see a list of adapters. Select each one in turn and check the adapter useage in the list. The one you use to connect to the internet should be "External". The others should be "Internal". (Normal setup). If one is not what you expect it to be, double click the adapter to open it's properties and override the useage by selecting a different entry from the list.

Hi EricB,

It deosn't seem to be DLL related. I've just managed to reproduce the problem - and it seems to be OS + SP related. One question - which OS + Service pack combination are you running ?

Hi Pascal,

Thanks for the info on configuring the adapters.

The Administrator has full control of the C:\Program Files\Wingate folder.

The machine is running Windows 2000 Server with SP2 (still getting to know this machine - will update the SP).
