Why can't I ping my VPN server through my LAN?

VPN SERVER: WinXP using Wingate VPN

I have the network setup using a router to connect to the Internet and when I turn off the VPN engine, I can get access to the VPN Server (WinXP Box). The moment I turn the VPN software on, down goes the connection to the WinXP Box. The Router is a Linksys BEFSR41 and I have port forwarding on port 809 set up. The one thing I did notice is that when I ping the WinXP Box and the VPN Engine is running, under the firewall tab on Wingate VPN, it shows that it tried to access it but for whatever reason it was not allowed.

Question 1: Why is it not allowed or Why can't I ping my machine?

Question 2: How do I setup my LAN to access the VPN Server when
software is up?

NOTE: I realize that both questions could be the result of the same
problem, so any help is appreciated.

Under networking, your adapters are probably marked incorrectly. So when traffic comes in from the local network, WinGate thinks it is coming from an external (public) adapter and firewalls that traffic.

Open GateKeeper, go to the networking pane and make sure that the adapter useage is correct. The adapter you use to connect to the internet should be marked as "External" and the one you use to connect to your local network should be marked as "Internal".
