Still Slow

Postby abudguy » Dec 10 04 7:50 am

I am trying to setup Wingate VPN for a remote user. I have the software installed and connected to the Network, but the speed is soooo slow.

I have set the MTU rate for Windows XP (instructions from support.microsoft.com) to 1350. And the rate is still so slow, almost to the point that it is unusable.

Are there any other things I can try to speed up the connect? I was thinking of using a static route, but I don't know enough about it.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

How do you connect to the internet?

Is it connection establishment that is slow? Or browsing? Copying files? Running certain applications?

At the Server, we have DSL service through SBC, which runs okay.
The remote computer has a cable modem, which was benchmarking through speakeasy at 2500 +/-. (I haven't benchmarked the DSL yet). The DSL is being routed through a Linksys Router, which I have the appropriate pinholes activated and working. I do not use the DHCP for the Linksys, but manually configured each computer on the local net.

The purpose of the VPN is to allow a remote leasing office access to our management software, so they have to login and access the files on the server.

When I first got it connected, I opened the drive with the shares on it, and it opened fine. When I open excel files, for example, it takes quite a while to load. What would take about 10 secs locally, was taking 3-5 minutes to load over the VPN.

I pinged 1350 bytes to the server from the remote location earlier today, just to find that the time was just under 100ms. (the office is about 40 miles away). I wasn't sure if that was good or not.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Ping time looks fine - can be an MTU problem which requires packets to be retransmitted too often.

Does the MTU need to be changed on both computers or just one? I finally found where to change it on the server, so I changed it to 1350, just to be safe. (I pinged that from the local office earlier today)

Normally one is enough - but this is true mostly for TCP connections. UDP traffic, which is very important in WIndows networking relies on MTU value from both sides - try changing it on the other side, too.

Please forgive me for silly questions, but....

Is the MTU changed on the adapter information on the General Screen of the Gatekeeper software? On the remote machine, I changed it in XP's registry by following the instructions on Microsoft's support page for it.
