Can't explore VPN server but can ping it

I am running VPN server on an NT4 server which is connected to a draytek router via a hub. I can ping the internal IP address of the server from the client which is a laptop running XP pro.

I can also download email from the server machine internal email server.

But when I try to open or explore the server (or for that matter any of the workstations) nothing happens.

I have the draytek setup to allow port 809 TCP and UDP and forward to the server. That seems OK.

It was suggested that I have some kind of WINS problem but we don't have WINS installed.

Any ideas .. before I loose all my hair!

Have you tried exploring the client machine with its internal IP address rather than a name?
