WinGateVPN uses TCP/UDP port 809 by default. Can I get you to test with telnet that you actually have the ports open for connectivity?
To telnet into the Host:
On the "Joiner" (client, at your home), open a command prompt and test via telnet whether the ports are opened correctly on the "Host".
(windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> telnet -->
open vpn.myserver.com 809
If the Windows goes blank, or say "Press any key" then you have connectivity to that port.
If you get the error message: Connecting To vpn.myserver.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 809: Connect failed
... Then there most probably is a firewall blocking the port....
I set up the VPN software on a PC on the LAN, and exported the certificate, but when I try to connect at home, it will not establish a connection.
When you are at work, can you confirm your static public ip address is correct? This can be confirmed by browsing to
http://www.whatismyip.com
Please make sure the public address corresponds to the one you have set in the WinGate Joiner (Client on your home network).
*Tip. If you are using Windows XP SP2, you may want to check that the firewall is off for the sake of testing
Right Click My Computer --> Manage --> Services and Applications --> Services --> Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Set the Startup type to disabled. Then stop the service. WinGateVPN has a firewall that is already configured to allow connections from VPN clients; so you will still be secure.
