Using Wingate as VPN client ????

Postby garyoNC » Aug 02 05 9:23 am

I have downloaded Wingate V2.0 and cannot see how to configure it for use as a VPN client on a WXP/2000 computer. I have looked on the web site but can't find any info.

I have a VPN router setup at a remote location and want to access a single PC on that network through the router using Wingate V2.0 VPN client software loaded on a different PC over the Internet. How do I accomplish this?

Thanks

Hi,

WinGate VPN is a proprietary VPN, meaning it cannot be used to connect to another type of VPN like a VPN router, or a MS or Cisco VPN. To run WinGate VPN you need the WinGate VPN software on the host and the joiner computer.

In your scenario you would want to install WinGate VPN on a gateway machine at the remote location and on the XP/2k client. You would then set up a VPN to host at the remote location and join it from the XP/2k client.

There isn't a gateway machine. After the router I want to go directly to a PC. Is this possible?

It is. If you setup the WinGate VPN software on the PC you want to access you can simply redirect any traffic coming in on the VPN ports (809 TCP and UDP by default) to that machine to ensure it will reach that PC. That PC acts as host, accepts the connection from the joiner and all traffic between the two will then be encrypted.

Okay. Now can I load the software on a Windows 2003 Server? Will it still be encrypted and safe? This is for one-way communication only. My customers will just need access to the Server.

Yes, Wingate VPN does secure traffic well.
