Can not ping VPN server via hostname

Postby creeping » Apr 23 07 9:23 pm

I can not seem to find my answer in the forums.

Can connect to VPN fine and ping by IP, but can not ping by hostname

VPN server network
=============
D-link 502T Router
- 10.1.1.1
- Port 809 TCP\UDP forwarded to VPN server
- DHCP assigns 10.1.1.8 /255.0.0.0 to VPN server (reservation by MAC)
- RIP2 enabled

VPN server
=======
- Windows XP Pro SP2
- Windows firewall disabled, no other firewall apart from router
- NETBIOS over TCP on NIC enabled
- computer browser service running

Winagte VPN settings
==============
- DHCP = disabled
- DNS server = 10.1.1.1

VPN client network
============
- Single PC on internet (Vodum connection, public IP)
- Windows XP Home SP2
- Windows firewall disabled, no other firewall apart from router
- Published routes = 10.1.1.8 /255.255.255.255

Only 1 PC on the VPN server network.
Both client and server are running version 2.1.0

looks like a WINS issue, but I dont won't to have to manually configure to many settings etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

1. You have said the VPN Joiner (Client) has a public ip, but the ip address you have quoted is the same as the VPN Host (Server) - if they are using the same ip addresses or subnets, then you will need to change one of them.

2. On the VPN Joiner (Client), is the Windows Firewall disabled in the Windows Services?

3. On the VPN Joiner (Client), is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on the network card?

4. On the VPN Joiner (Client), confirm UDP broadcasts are enabled - it should be by default; location is shown in the image below.

Sorry, the public IP address the client receives is something like:

IP 121.45.1.36
Subnet 255.255.255.255
Gateway 121.45.1.36

The client's firewall/ICS service is disabled.

UDP broadcasts are enabled.

The clients NETBIOS over TCPIP is enabled (although it keeps reverting to disabled as I found many dialup air card do)

I have also tried pinging my host from another wingate VPN network in the 192.168.30.x range with the same results. In this network firewall is disabled etc.
