Loss of internet sharing capability after installing vpn

Postby classic » Feb 26 04 2:48 am

After successfully installing wingate vpn on my home computer(vpn client), which is connected to the internet via an internal DSL modem, the other pc(participant) on my home network can no longer connect to the internet.

When I connect my home computer(vpn client) to my vpn, both the home computer, and the other pc (participant) on my home network are able to browse the remote network properly so the vpn connection appears to by functioning normally.

The home computer(vpn client) is able to connect to the internet without problems.

Hi there

Just a few questions

Was it the VPN only version of WinGate or the full version of WinGate that you installed?

How was the other PC connecting to the Internet before WinGateVPN was
installed? Was it using MS Internet connection sharing (ICS) through the machine that now has WinGateVPN installed?

It is recommended for WinGate installations that ICS be completely disabled as it tends to mess with WinGate doing the job of Internet sharing.

If it is the case that you have installed the VPN only version of WinGate, then this doesnt provide the Internet proxy sharing capabilities of the full version of WinGate, and in combination with using ICS would definitely cause connection issues for the other machine.

Let us know how your configured so we can narrow it down.

I am running Wingate VPN version 1.2.3 Build 901. It is installed on a pc running XP pro. Prior to installing Wingate, internet sharing and the XP firewall were active and the laptop connected to the internet thru the PC normally.

Wingate VPN will not install unless you disable internet sharing and the XP firewall, so currently the laptop is unable to connect to the internet with ICS and the XP firewall disabled. The VPN Client pc serves as the internet gateway for the laptop which is connected to the home network via a wireless access point. The Static IP addresses are as follows:

Client PC running wingate:
IP address: 10.137.63.110
mask: 255.255.255.255
Gateway 208.186.105.24

Laptop running Ripclient:
IP address: 10.137.63.119
mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway: 10.137.63.110

Both the PC client and the laptop are the only members of the GMA02309 workgroup.

Yes unfortunately if you wish to have WinGate VPN and some form of Internet connection sharing on the PC running WinGateVPN, then I suggest you use try the WinGate full version which offers both connection sharing and VPN in one (depending on licence choice of course).
