Clients can't find Server

Postby gswim » Sep 09 04 1:31 am

Using wingate 6. My clients can all access the internet through my server however my clients can't find my server computer, and my server can't find my clients.
My clients CAN talk to each other. I don't know if this my be a firewall problem that is within Wingate. Any help would be appreciated.

Just to check the topology.

Server is the WinGate VPN Host. Are the clients computers connecting to the server through the VPN (I.e. VPN Clients) or are they LAN clients, on the same network?

Different solutions might apply in either case. In the first, the most likely problem is with the tunnels. Can you then ping the internal IP address of the server? If not, it's definately a tunnel problem. That has two causes - the first is normally an intermediary router / nat / firewall that does not forward port 809 UDP. This is normally something you have to configure manually. (Also known as virtual servers, pinholes, etc., depending on the device you use to connect to the internet).

The second cause could be MTU related. In this case you'd expect the pings to succeed with the normal size though, but to fail for larger packets. The Guideline for setting up a functional VPN gives more information on this.

In the second scenario, if you're using WinGate 6.0 or VPN 2.0 it's most likely a problem with the way your adapters are detected. It could be that WinGate thinks your internal is external and your external is internal. (In this case, it'll be firewalling the internal interface) Double check that by going to the Network pane and making sure the adapter useage is correct.
