Wingate VPN Set Up

Postby SRS » Sep 14 04 6:51 am

Set up wingate VPN on host PC, which is part of a 3 PC LAN. All PC's using XP home edition. After install other LAN PC's could not access files, etc. on host machined. I have not yet set up single client notebook with VPN. How do I restore LAN access to host PC? Also, LAN accesses Internet via linksys router, WRT54GS. Thanks.

It sounds as if your LAN is being firewalled. Is there anything appearing on the Firewall pane? If there is, go to the "Network" pane in GateKeeper. Verify that each adapter listed there is specified correctly. Your LAN adapter should be marked as "Internal", your Internet adapter should be marked as "External" for useage.

Thanks for the response. My VPN firewall is disabled. The network pane lists my hosts wireless connection as enabled internally; I can access the Internet with it but not the LAN network; all of the 3 PCs go through the same router to access the LAN and Internet. The Gateway address for the router is correctly identified on the Network pane. The remaining 2 PC work stations can access each other on the LAN and the Internet but not the host, which is the only PC with Wingate VPN installed. Please advise.

Does this behaviour change if you stop WinGate VPN?

No! Do I presume that the problem is either my network configuration or the router? Thanks for your continued help.

Well, that was the first theory - that WinGate VPN might be interfering somehow. You say that the firewall is disabled in WinGate VPN - so, let's confirm if it's the driver or something else.

If you open the Extended Networking Properties in GateKeeper you should see a tickbox for "Keep Firewall running after Engine is stopped" and one for "Protect my system before WinGate starts". Those could potentially block traffic after you've stopped the program.

However, I'm wondering about your configuration at the moment. You only have the one adapter in it - which you say has been set to internal useage, correct? Yet you use it as your external connection as well - which might be confusing matters at the moment.

Both Extended Networking Properties boxes to which you referred have been unchecked; only "protect my system before WinGate starts" was checked previously. The problem, however, persists. Regarding the adapter, the host is connected to the router via wireless adapter, the Linksys WRT54GS; this provides Internet and LAN connection. Before the VNP software was installed, the host PC was able to access both. The LAN uses the Microsoft Windows Network wizard to create the internal network.

The 2 PCs on the LAN, which are not part of the VPN system, cannot ping the VPN host machine. In each instance, the reply is "request timed out." When the VPN software is uninstalled, LAN communication is restored between the 3 LAN PCs. So, the problem persists. I'm getting desperate because I need to get the VPN set up for my remote client access. Is this problem that complicated to resolve?

It should not be difficult to resolve. Because you've only got the one adapter, and it is both for your external and internal connectivity it can cause problems if WinGate does not determine it's useage correctly. I have the same problem here when I start WinGate on my dev machine, because it deems my adapter to be external and then begins firewalling the LAN connections. Once I'd specified the override to "Internal" it worked fine.

From the sound of it though, the firewall is not disabled / not responding to being disabled. You're not seeing anything in the firewall window when this happens? I've not been able to reproduce this inability to disable the firewall properly, so it's highly unlikely - but still work a check.

But, it is starting to sound as if there might be something different about your setup. So, we need a few more bits of information:

1. The current route table (With or without WinGate installed)
2. If possible, your OS version + Service Packs
3. If possible, the make/model of network cards you use
4. The version of WinGate / WinGate VPN you are using

Thanks,
Pascal

Thanks. I am unable to provide all of the information you requested; host PC is at office--it's 7:36 PM here on the home front. I'll have to send response tomorrow from the office. I can advise that the WinGate VPN version is 2.0. My operating system is Windows Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 1; this is also correct for my remote client, which has not yet been introduced in to the equation. For future use, my remote system uses the following as its wireless network card: Gigabyte GN-WIAG wireless network mini PC adapter. Also, I am unfamiliar with the term, "route table." To be continued.

Hi,

Thanks for all that. (Network card was necessary to see if it is based on specific chipsets, where there are workarounds that need to be enabled, etc.)

I assume that Windows Home Edition means it's Windows XP Home?

You can get a route table by opening a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd.exe) and running "route print" from the command prompt. That will give you output similar to:

Continuation: Office host PC accesses LAN and Internet with a Linksys wireless adapter, Instant Wireless PCI Card V2.7. It also has disabled a hard wire adapter, GVC-REALTEK Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter. Also confirmed, OS is XP Home Edition. The route table for the host PC per your request is as follows:

Okay, that all looks fine. Everything you've indicated on the forum points to an installation that should be working (According to myself and Genie). I'm wondering if there isn't a configuration problem with WinGate itself - can you send us a copy of your config report, please? You can either email it to me directly (Email address in signature / profile) OR post it back to this topic.

For Adrien or Matt

During Pascal's absence, wondering if either of you can get back with a response to my dilemma after submitting requested VPN configuration data earlier this week. I was hoping to have this resolved by today so remote client could be set up and activated. Thanks.

If you mean can the host PC access the Internet, yes; if you mean the LAN, no; the latter has been the problem with the set up.

Hi

If this is a release of WinGate VPN 2.0 prior to build 1000, then the presense of a default gateway in your adapter configuration will mean it is deemed to be external.

I read all the responses in this thread, and can't see where you answered the question about the adapter's usage.

the adapter usage is a critically important configuration parameter, if it is wrong, many things will not work, and you will get symptoms like you are seeing.

To view the current adapter usage, you go into GateKeeper, select the network tab, look at the bottom under "network connections", in the "usage" column. If your LAN adapter has "external" here, you have a problem. To change its setting, double click on it, and select "an internal protected network" on the "General" tab.

Regards

I don't know if this version is pre 1000 build, but the adapter usage is, and has been, set to internal protected network; so my problem persists. This seems to be way too complicated for the simple purpose for which I purchased this software! What additional information do you need to assess and resolve this problem? Regards.
