Can't view network behind VPN server after upgrade

Postby robn » Sep 22 04 2:31 am

I have upgraded both the server and client side VPN as of the latest version (as of 21st September), the VPN was working fine, but after the upgrade the clients can connect to the VPN server and see the files and folders on the server. But are unable to now view the other PC's on the network, of which previously they were able to view.

On doing a ping from the client machines they can ping the IP address and the name of the server. But when they try pinging any other machines that were previously accessible they come back with request timed out message. When they try using the machine name for the ping the results show it pinging the machine name and filling in the correct IP address but showing request timed out on all 4 attempts.

when doing a tracert to the server its links direct to the VPN server but when doing a tracert to a machine on the network behind the VPN the trace attempts to go through the internet.

Any help would be much appreciated

many thanks

Hi

This sounds like the routes for the local network are not being published.

This can happen if the adapter usage has changed on the internal adapter. We changed the way adapter usage is assumed in the latest version to solve support issues.

Adapter usage affects which routes are published by default over the VPN (i.e we don't publish network routes for external adapters). It also affects whether RIP updates are sent, since we don't send these out external interfaces.

To verify the adapter usage, check in GateKeeper, under the network tab, and look in the usage column in the Network Connections panel. To change this, simply double-click an adapter, and set it to the appropriate value.

Local network option not available

Postby robn » Sep 23 04 12:00 am

One thing I have noticed on the VPN server after the upgrade is that on the VPNS hosted properties details under the local participation is there are only two option now one which is 'no local participation' and 'local machine only' where as in the previous version there was a third option which we had the connection set to which was 'local network'.

I think this is probably the problem, as without the 'local network' setting I presume you are unable to browse passed the server? The adapter the connection uses is set to internal (local area network adapter), and the setting under the general tab is set to Auto, after changing to either of the other two options (internal protected network or External untrusted network), nothing changes in the Local Participation section of the VPN's to host properties.

The VPN server is sat behind a firewall which port forwards to the server inside the network.

Am I correct in assuming that I need the local network setting to be able to view the network behind the VPN server and if so how I get this option to show?

many thanks

Hi

Normally that option is available unless the type of VPN license you are using is a single user license.

We did have trouble with activation of 3 user licenses for a while, so if you are running a WinGate VPN gateway license for 3 user LAN, then try reactivating the license (it will generate a new activation for you with the correct details).
