wingate vpn, outlook and smtp

hi,
I'm in the process of evaluating wingate vpn. has anybody had any problem with outlook timing out on a smtp server after installing wingate vpn? the test messages go out fine but real email don't and I can't work out if this has a link (or if it can have a link) whatsoever with wingate vpn.

Can you browse shares and do file operations (copy and paste) on the remote network correctly? Could be an MTU related issue; a reference to test below.
