Connection Refused by remote host

Postby paros » Jul 12 05 2:26 am

In am trialling the Wingate VPN software and
cannot resolve "Connection Refused by remote host" error
on the remote machine.

Server Setup:
WinXP Home, Broadband Router with DHCP enabled, Firewall enabled, Port forwarding on 809 set up on server IP address.
Norton Internet Security Personal Firewall is disabled.
Windows Firewall in disabled

Remote Setup:
Win XP Pro, Tested via dial up ISP though normally it would be through
it's own Broadband router.

I installed the Wingate VPN software on both machine.
Added a VPN's hosted to the server + users who can connect to the
VPN under policies.
Added a VPN's to jon to the Remote Client

I can ping the DNS of the server from the Remote Client Okay

Appreciate some assistance with this.

My setup is vey basic.

Can you confirm point 1 and 2 from this post?

Also, there is a new Knowledge Base arthicle regarding Norton Internet Security co-existing with WinGateVPN. It can be found here: http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ate&_i=116

re: Connection refused by remote host

Postby paros » Jul 14 05 1:18 am

I have tried what you suggested. The good news is that I had the wrong IP address for the VPN host machine. Once I entered the correct detials. Bad news is that I still cannot connect
I was able to get a little further but not all the way.

I now get Error 800: unable to establish a VPN connection.
I checked that the firwalls were turned off

On the remote side, when I connent in the (remote networks VPN) window, I get a "Connected: SSL control channel negotiated"
below this message I can see a directory tree starting with
Local network of SERVER[Master] ie the VPN Server machine

In the network connections window below, the VPN status is listed
as disconnected.

I then try to connect via Start ->connect to -> AACL VPN
I then get an error
Error Connecting to AACL VPN
Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. ....

Appreciate your help

Hi Peter,

It sounds like you are close! I want to clarify a few things.

On the remote side, when I connent in the (remote networks VPN) window, I get a "Connected: SSL control channel negotiated"
below this message I can see a directory tree starting with
Local network of SERVER[Master] ie the VPN Server machine

With WinGate VPN, you are either a Joiner (client) or a Host (server).
You cannot establish the login for the WinGate VPN from the Host to the Joiner. You must login from the Joiner to the Host. Once the joiner has been authenticated with the Host, then you can access shares/applications from either direction.

It sounds like you have successfully connected. Are you able to browse any shares/files?

In the network connections window below, the VPN status is listed
as disconnected.

That is not part of WinGates VPN. It must be another VPNs product connectoid.

I then try to connect via Start ->connect to -> AACL VPN
I then get an error
Error Connecting to AACL VPN
Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. ....

Wingate VPNs are not located in Start --> Connect to --> ...
They reside in the "Remote Networks VPN" window within GateKeeper.

If you are still having trouble, can we get you to make a support ticket and reference this post as well as any update on your situation. http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=tickets&_m=submit

1. If within protocol, please attach the exported vpn file to it, so we can assess the situation (we will require the username and password as well).
2. A ipconfig/all of your network settings. (windows) Start menu --> run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all >> C:\ipa.txt
One you have done that command, attach the file in question ( C:\ipa.txt )

Not connection

Postby paros » Jul 15 05 2:20 pm

Thanks for your reply.

From the Client it looks like I have connected successfully
msg is "Connected: SSL control channel negotiated"

However, I cannot do anything further like browse/share files.
"How do I do this?" Via Wingate VPN or Windows Explorer?? Could you please be specific.

I have attached the ipa.txt file to the service record.

How do I export a vpn file? On the Client side or Host side?

Service record

Postby paros » Jul 15 05 2:25 pm

I tried to send ipa.txt via the support recorded link however it timed out. The screen also states that I need a licence number to generate a support record otherwise I'll be redirected to the forum. As this is a trial, I do not have a licence number.

Hi,

You should be able to browse the remote machines either from within the GateKeeper by going to the remote networks, expanding the remote workgroup/domain and double clicking the active machines, or through Windows browsing. Try going to the start menu, Run and typing \\(machine name), this should open the shares on that machine.

If this doesn't work are you able to ping the remote machines by name? If not by name, what about IP address?

Don't worry about the message on the support ticket page, it won't redirect you.

I can ping the IP address and it responds

I cannot browse the remote machines from either the Gatekeeper
or through Windows browsing.

In the remote networks window, below the (join) I can see the following tree
1. Connected: SSL control channe connected
2. Local network of SERVER [MASTER] ( this is the VPN Host machine)
3. Microsoft Windows Network
4. Published routes
5. Local network of Laptop [Local] ( this is the VPN client machine)
5. Microsoft Windows Network
6. Published routes
7. Tunnels

When I double click on 3. Microsoft Windows Network, I would expect to see the shared drives on the Host machine. Nothing happens when I do this.

I have setup a shared drive on the Host machine and expect to see it here.

I think this is closed to working but one piece of the puzzle is missing.

thanks again
Peter

PS How do I create an exported VPN file?? From the host or client???

If you are having troubles attaching the relevant files, please send to jamesc at qbik dot com and carbon copy to mattp

To export your configuration settings,

1. Select your host
2. Press the export config button

Hi,

I just sent a reply to your email. And got an error stating: maildir delivery failed: Sorry, mailbox over quota.

Sounds like you have to much data in your mail box and it will not accept any more emails. Please advise, either by mail or post

Seems ok from my home account. Can you try again, and if it does not work, try the mattp address and have "Attention James" somewhere in the email.

Alternatively, our fax number is +64 9 3732 509

The email I tried to send contained the following.

Can you send the ipa.txt file.
Can you also send the WinGate VPN key you exported with a username and password if within protocol
And a question regarding if you ran any security suites like mcafee, nortons IS, zone.. etc?

Also, What does bubba's have to do with the VPN :) (I got an attachment of a baby)

Hi James

I tried to connect from home:
Via Dialup:
It worked exactly as it did from work. ie Could not explore HOST
in remote networks windows. VPN tunnel connected & I could
connect via the desktop shortcut ie \\192. .. & transfer the log file.

Via Broadband:
Does not work - only tunnel connects
In Wingate Remote Networks Window the HOST (called Server)
is "Not Accessible". The Join does work & I get the
"Connected: SSL control channel negotiated". The desktop
shortcut does not work.

At home I am using a Dlink DSL504 broadband router. Firewall
appears to be off. Norton Antivirus is disabled. Windows firewall
disabled.

regards
Peter
