behind an ADSL modem and acting up

Postby drjohn999 » Jul 13 05 5:16 pm

I recently installed a wireless setup at a client's location with a Linksys wireless router/switch/NAT/firewall device on an ADSL modem. Wingate VPN client is used on a couple of laptops, and either via wireless or if wired directly to the modem (wireless router completly disconnected), I have a problem with the VPN connection. The same laptops have no problem with the VPN at most Kinkos here in the US, coffee houses, hotels, etc. All PCs, wired or wireless, have no problems with internet access, email, etc. thru the router and modem.

The VPN connection is negotiated just fine, I can open the shared folder area on the VPN server PC (which is on a cable modem w/ Wingate as router/NAT), copy files across the VPN, and open text files. If I try to open a QuickBooks2005 file, or an Excel spreadsheet, however, the connection fails and I get an "error 64: the connection was lost" in QuickBooks, or a "Delayed write error-- the data was lost" error in Excel.

The DSL modem is probably using PPPoE -- is that a potential problem? I did check the MTU on the DSL modem, which was at the default 1500.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as always.

Hi Genie,

I don't think this is the problem. The Wingate server PC is a Win2K machine (with latest SP); the MSoft report you cite is for WinXP.

The problem is specific to the particular DSL connection, although I've seen it once at another (hotel) wireless connection once, which I suppose could have been DSL...

What version of Wingate are you using?

The latest - 6.0.4.1025. As I said above, the VPN works well in some locations, and not at all in others. My observations are that one should avoid DSL connections and crowded public areas. Using it from a fast connection with low loading seems to work well most of the time.

Might be - I found out that SMB protocol has given me lots of troubles on my home network when I was trying to copy huge file from 2K machine to XP machine through WiFi connection - I couldn't get it past 75% top - more often than not it broke out earlier. So I am wondering if it might be some kind of a protocol sensitivity problem?

Having siad that I use ADSL connection from home and when I connect my home network to the office one through Wingate VPN I have no problems at all.
