Trial capabilities question

Postby GeoD » Jul 14 05 2:29 am

I need to connect a remote office with 4 machines to the main office with 10 machines.
Both are connected via dsl (static IP) through broadband routers.
The remote office must be able to access windows shares on several machines at the main location.
The corp network is domain based and the PDC is at the main location.
The remotes must access an Exchange server on the PDC.
A) can wingate vpn do the job here?
B) will the trial support all features?

Hi,

WinGate VPN will allow the remote clients to connect to the LAN and (mostly) operate as though they were physically on the LAN. I say mostly because you will have performance issues if you use client/server applications due to the amount of data that must be transferred over the VPN. So, if the clients are using Exchange you might see some performance loss, whereas if they use POP3 to retrieve their mail from the server you wouldn't see the same performance hit.

The trial license gives you an unlimited user license with no limitations.

Hi Matt,

I fully understand the performance issues. I have no expectation that the remote office will be as snappy as the main office. The reason I mentioned Exchange and the many network shares is that I tried another VPN product and it did not handle the broadcast packets MS uses for their netbios name service and clients were unable to login to Exchange. The information you have provided looks promising and I will give WinGateVPN a try. I'll let you
know how it goes in a followup on Monday.

Thanks for the prompt reply,

Great, one thing to check while we're talking about that is please make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on the external adapters of the WinGate VPN servers, then they will pass on that information.
