What's the difference between WinGate and WinGateVPN?

Postby jsrober » Feb 28 06 3:55 pm

WinGate can make VPN's so why do I need WinGateVPN?

You need WinGate VPN if you only want VPN access. (No proxies, NAT, etc.) Usually useful more for client installations or road warrior type of setups.

So Wingate then has VPN built in. But how does this work, Licence wise.

Does the Local Nework where Wingate is installed have the VPN server and individual single use licenses need to be purchased for each person who wants to access it?

In order to run Wingate VPN you have to have two or more VPN-enabled licenses - one for the server and one for each joiner.

The Wingate VPN-enabled Licence I presume does not come with Normal Wingate.

That would mean

1 Wingate Licence (For Network monitoring etc, lets say 25 concur. users)

1 Wingate VPN LAN 6-user Licence

1 Single user licence

The above setup would make the following possable.

1. Max of 25 concur. users on the LAN server.
2. 6 Accesable computers on the LAN via VPN
3. 1 Computer outside the LAN that can connect to the LAN via the VPN

Please tell me if I'm getting this all wrong

Depends on what license you currently have for WinGate. What is that? (Some WinGate licenses come with VPN)

Ok, Enterprise licenses already includes VPN. Professional / Standard does not. Then you would need:

1. WinGate VPN license for 6 users. This allows the VPN endpoint and 5 other computers to join.

2. WinGate VPN license for 1 user. This allows the VPN client joining in.

The easiest way is to count the number of VPN endpoints (Networks that will be participating in the VPN). That is the number of VPN licenses you need. Count the number of PCs at that location that will particpate in the VPN; that is the size of license you need. If you have a WinGate Enterprise license you do not need a separate VPN license for that endpoint.

Thanx, that helps alot. 1 more thing if i may. I have been using normal remote desktop apps like tightvnc etc. Does a VPN make you log on to a specific pc (remotly) or just make you part of that network (you being a additional pc to the network)

No, VPN serves as a "bridge" between two netwroks, or the proverbial "man in the middle", passing data from one end to another without changes (apart from securing the line by wrapping every packet on one end and unwrapping them on the other).

The VPN is effectively a very long network cable. It creates a secure, private network [Your LAN] operating over a public network [The Internet].

So before buying licenses and so forth I would strongly recommend that you evaluate the product and see if it will do what you want it to do. We offer full support during the 30 day trial period so you have more than enough time to experiment with it.
