W98 client doesn't appear in WinGate VPN

Postby Bernoldi » May 11 06 3:23 am

Hi,

VPN is working between servers and clients locate at the Host side.
At the join side, I need VPN stabilished with the server and a single client

This client is a w98 machine and has no gateway pointed to VPN, so I installed RIPclient. Even so this machine doesn't appear in WinGate VPN window.

I can ping and browse this machine by server.

Any suggestion to put it in VPN too?

Bernoldi, for the client machine to be visible to the remote server it must either be enumerated by the local VPN endpoint (Every 10 to 15 minutes) or it must have been restarted (Forced broadcast for up/down)

If the machine is prevented from being enumerated (By normal, LAN side networking) it's possible it wouldn't show up.

Are you running any software on the 98 client such as personal firewalls, etc.?

Hi,

I restarted server and client... Route was made from client to server.
There is no firewall or other software.

I really don't know what happens, is the first time that occurs.

Hi Bernoldi,

You should not rely on the interface seen in GateKeeper; you need to use basic proven networking methods to troubleshoot. I find your description a bit challenging to interpret, you should really use the facts you have gathered instead of an idle description.

1. Can you ping with NetBIOS names? If not can you ping with IP Addresses?
2. Can you access shares via UNC Paths and NetBIOS names? If not can you access shares with UNC Paths and IP Addresses \\192.168.0.1
3. If there is a firewall installed on that computer, but it is disabled, it can still firewall that computer; you usually need to stop it from Starting up with the computer; a classic case is ZoneAlarm.

VPN is working between servers and clients locate at the Host side.

4. There is no VPN when you are within the same LAN; so you are saying on that LAN you can access the shares of the Windows 98 computer from the computer that also has the role of the VPN Gateway; correct?
5. Is the server on the Win98 machine end set to maintain a browser list? (i.e. act as a potential/backup master browser, and is accessible to the other end of the VPN) (Sounds as though the other end is not getting the correct browser list netbios info).

Hi guys!

Yesterday the customer let me access the server by VNC.
The problem was license keys... He activate two licenses for one client, so WinGate provided the connectivity only to server.
I put our license for three users and everything works fine.

Thanx for your help!!

Regards,
Ricardo
